Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Specialist, Advising and Internships, is responsible for advising undergraduate students in the Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) degree program and managing the HDFS student internship program within the College of Education (COE). The internship is the required culminating experience of all students completing the HDFS education program and seeking certification in various areas of study. The Specialist maintains and enhances relationships between the program administrators and faculty and the external agencies associated with the program for student field experiences. The incumbent drafts site placement agreements between student and the site for campus review and approval and is the field experience liaison between the HDFS program, students, and agencies. The Specialist advises and counsels undergraduate students with curriculum and class selection decisions and consults with faculty to ensure students’ academic success. The position reports to the Associate Dean, COE. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 50% - Teaching and Internship Coordination Responsible for coordinating the HDFS internship program, including course information dissemination, course data collection related to the internship experience and student performance, and assessment/evaluation of the internship program Responsible for teaching the HDFS 470 Pre-Professional Internship course which requires a minimum number of hours on-site and specified hours in-classroom sessions, conduct information sessions for students in preparation for the internship experience, develop course resource materials such as website, listserv and internship guidelines, and assign final grades Assist faculty with curriculum design for field experiences Investigate and recruit placement sites for student internships, maintain collaboration and public relations between program faculty and agencies, and assist faculty in matching students’ skills and interests to appropriate sites Investigate and resolve student, agency, and advisor conflicts Responsible for supervision of HDFS program student workers 35% - Student Advisement Responsible for advising prospective and current undergraduate students, primarily freshman and sophomore level, in the HDFS Bachelor of Science degree program, and advise all HDFS minors Make decisions about and implement student transfers, waivers and/or substitutions of courses according to university, COE and faculty guidelines; resolve graduation discrepancies Assist faculty with evaluation and assessment of the advising function within COE Communicate information on the HDFS program to central Academic Advising and other applicable campus entities Attend campus-wide advisor meetings and communicate new information and/or campus regulations to faculty advisors handling junior and senior student advising 15% - Recruitment and Retention Coordinate HDFS recruitment efforts at Career Fairs, Nevada Bound program and orientations Maintain a recruitment database of interested students Position Description–Specialist, Advising & Internships (Human Development & Family Studies) Pg 3 Assess and assist students in problem-solving related to academic progress and success; determine complex problems that require referral to faculty Refer students to appropriate support services on campus 3. Level of Freedom: The Specialist is responsible for the HDFS internship program including maintaining and developing relationships with community agencies, and making decisions regarding placement of students for internship experience. The Specialist collaborates with academic faculty on matters related to the curricular design of HDFS 470 Internship course, the matching of skill/interest to internship site, and issues impacting student advising, recruitment, and retention. The position communicates faculty decisions concerning program requirements and course sequences, and works with faculty members in imparting correct and current information and advice to students. The Specialist makes decisions in advising, on course substitutions, waivers and transfer credit, and when to collaborate with faculty on conflicts and problems. The Specialist works with the Associate Dean on complex student issues, staffing needs and programming issues. Impact: Student success in internships and in completion of the HDFS degree program is dependent upon the Specialist’s abilities to successfully promote the program to external agencies, ensure proper placement of students at internship sites, and provide accurate advisement to students. The position is visible to the public through recruitment of agencies and placement of students for internship purposes. The decisions and judgments made by the Specialist have a direct impact on student progress to graduation. Improper decisions and advice could lead to students being delayed in graduation or taking unnecessary courses, or loss of credibility with community agencies. Sound decisions and judgments have a positive effect on students, the faculty, the programs and departments within COE, and the University as a whole. 4.
