Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department.
The Program Specialist, Head Start Program, assists Hispanic Head Start teachers earn a BS degree in
Early Childhood Education and assists participants in negotiating the academic program through
individual and group contacts. The individual monitors course work, arranges tutoring, serves as a
translator, and assists participants in applying new learning into their work setting. This position also
serves as liaison between the academic program and Head Start, and helps participants incorporate
Head Start Performance Standards and Nevada Early Childhood Standards in developmentally
appropriate ways.

30% -- Individual mentoring related to coursework
40% -- Observation in work setting and feedback

10% -- Coordinating and facilitating group meetings

The incumbent makes decisions and provides mentoring and advice to help students succeed in their
academic programs at UNR. Decisions and judgments of the incumbent reflect on all aspects of the
university and federal expectations in relation to grant funding. Failure to perform job impacts loss of
grant and the ability of students to be successful in academic goals.

administrators, and professors.

Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education or closely related field from a regionally
accredited institution
b. Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education necessary for a person entering this position.
Master’s Degree and three years of early childhood teaching experience and adult
teaching/mentoring
c. Indicate any license or certificate required for this position.
State certification in elementary education, early childhood education, or secondary
education
