1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Manager, Southern Nevada Sustainability, provides sustainability, hazardous waste compliance,
and pollution prevention technical assistance to small businesses and others throughout Nevada, with
a focus on Clark, Esmeralda, Lincoln, Mineral, and Nye Counties. The position is located in the
Business Environmental Program (BEP), Nevada Small Business Development Center (NSBDC)
within the College of Business (COB), at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). The position may be
housed in any one of the NSBDC’s service centers located throughout the state in order to best meet
assistance delivery needs, and is currently located in BEP offices in Las Vegas. The position is
consistent with the University’s community outreach efforts and NSBDC’s mission to serve small
businesses throughout Nevada. The position strives to improve the economic competitiveness of
Nevada businesses while reducing environmental impacts, and improving compliance with hazardous
waste regulations. The position reports to the Director, Business Environmental Program.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage

70% - Technical Assistance
 Conduct on-site assessments of sustainability, waste management, and pollution prevention
practices at businesses and offer personal counseling to businesses across the state
 Develop and present training seminars on hazardous waste management and pollution
prevention to the business community across the state
 Provide assistance through a toll-free assistance line
 Write fact sheets, manuals, and articles for publication and distribution to businesses and
participate in the development of other special reports or projects
15% - Training
 Provide educational outreach through group presentation to trade associations, economic
development agencies, and at various trade shows and conferences and maintain the mailing
list and database marketing of services and training seminars
 Track new information/materials and maintain a resource center to support hazardous waste
management and pollution assistance services
10% - Partnerships and Intern Programs
 Identify additional agencies, trade associations, chambers, etc. to align with for advancement
of BEP as an organization
 Work with these groups to assess specific industry needs and find platforms for collaboration
 Set-up internship program in cooperation with University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and/or
College of Southern Nevada (CSN)
 Work with UNLV and CSN professors to match student needs to the needs of BEP;
identify/recruit/interview intern candidates
 Supervise and mentor all BEP interns in Southern Nevada, providing necessary training and
guidance to complete tasks and adhere to administrative requirements set by UNLV and CSN
 Review all projects and work completed by interns
 Verify hours, if necessary, for course credit and/or payroll purposes
5% - Funding/Grant Acquisition
 Assist in funding opportunity identification in Southern Nevada
 Write grant proposals when appropriate

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom
The Manager has a high level of independent decision making with regard to daily management and
oversight of projects and in communication of information to clients. Because the position is located
in southern Nevada, the incumbent has a high level of autonomy in carrying out the responsibilities
assigned.
Impact
The Manager’s performance affects the economics of the assisted businesses while reducing
environmental impact. BEP is recognized as one of COB’s strongest community outreach programs.
The position is very visible to the public and therefore has a direct impact on the perception and
professional reputation of the NSBDC/BBER and university. Since the position is associated with the
University, it serves as an excellent tool for building stronger bridges between the community and the
University.
4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge of:
 Processes and operations typically used by industry and small businesses (dry-cleaning, auto
repair/auto body, etc.) and the different waste streams they generate are required
 Concepts of sustainability, pollution prevention, waste reduction techniques, and technology
are essential
 The hazardous waste regulations and the environmental regulatory structure is imperative
 Training methods
Skills:
 Excellent verbal and written communication skills including public speaking
 Interpersonal and human relations skills
 Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not
limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email)
 Time management and follow up to bring clients to implementation of recommendations
 Intern management
Ability to:
 Develop credibility, establish rapport, and formulate partnerships with diverse populations that
result in collaborative efforts, and sustain effective cooperative working relationships
 Travel as needed
