Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. (This section is used for advertisement of the position.) The Manager of the Black Rock Press (BRP) is located in the Department of Art with teaching, research, and service responsibilities. The Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation and administration of the BRP which includes teaching book arts courses, working with independent study students and interns, coordinating the Press's publishing program, producing printed books and other materials, and other activities as required. The position reports to the Chair, Department of Art. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 40% - Black Rock Press Management Direct the activities of the BRP publishing program to include design, production, sales, and marketing of trade books; website design and maintenance; development activities and public relations Participate in long-range planning and decisions regarding the curriculum, mission, and direction of the Press Participate on departmental, school, college and University-wide committees Participate in the activities of the College Book Art Association Work with the Director of the Sheppard Gallery to coordinate exhibition opportunities 35% - Teaching Teach all aspects of a book arts curriculum including design, letterpress printing, typography, book structures, and papermaking Lecture on the history of printing, typography, design, printing and book history and contemporary fine printing using materials from the library’s Special Collections Department Teach four sections of Art 414 per year Teach individual study, studio internship Coordinate publishing internship program with English Department Work with BA/BFA undergraduates and MFA candidates Coordinate curriculum development in consultation with the faculty of the Department of Art, including the creation of new courses and the further integration of Book Arts courses into the Departmental degree programs 25% - Design and Production Design and production of limited edition books and broadsides Design and production of trade editions published by the BRP Creation of artist’s books using innovative, contemporary and traditional presentation and materials Position Description – Manager, Black Rock Press Page 3 3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The Manager reports to the Director of graphic arts. The Manager has full freedom to take action and make decisions regarding all aspects of the daily operations of the BRP. The BRP Advisory Board functions as a support mechanism to assist the Director of the press. The BRP explores all aspects of traditional and experimental book arts in collaboration with all areas of the Department of Art, including Printmaking, Photography and Digital Media. The BRP is poised to become a crucial area of creative exploration and integration of various media. The position consults with the Director and gains approval of publication final product and on curriculum changes for courses taught. Impact: The resulting work performed by the Manager of the BRP will have a positive impact on the research, education and outreach goals of the Department of Art, School of the Arts, College of Liberal Arts and the University of Nevada, Reno as a whole. The impact of the BRP as an outreach mechanism is outstanding. Publications by the BRP have a reputation for quality and innovation in the realm of fine arts publishing land contemporary literature. This reputation will serve to encourage the growing consideration of the University as a leader in the field of visual arts practice. 4.
