1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Health Services Research Analyst designs, conducts, and coordinates research coordinated by the Office
of Statewide Initiatives (OSI), including, but not limited to (a) rural health workforce supply and demand analysis;
(b) program and project evaluation, including evaluation support for Project ECHO Nevada and other OSI
programs; (c) rural hospital patient and employee satisfaction surveys; (d) community health care needs
assessments; (e) monitoring and tracking systems development for health care and hospital performance
improvement, including on-line survey construction and data analysis; and/or (f) overall health services data
collection. The position reports to the Director of Health Policy Research, OSI.

50% - Health Services
 Provide health services research and support to OSI, including survey design, database development
and management, statistical analysis, health workforce research, and primary and secondary data
collection
 Respond to data requests and technical questions regarding data, trends, methodologies, and results
from OSI research and policy analysis
40% - Reporting
 Develop and prepare reports based on the primary and secondary research findings and policy analysis
undertaken by OSI
10% - Supervision
 Oversee work undertaken by student workers and interns assigned to health services research projects
in OSI
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Analyst designs, conducts and coordinates research methods to carry out the funded programs coordinated
by the OSI. The position must make independent decisions and judgments regarding the methodology and
design of a research survey based on guidelines or requests from the funding agency or organization. The
position uses varied survey types, data collection methods, and databases and must determine the best plan for
each project. The incumbent consults with the Director on overall project design before implementing project.
Impact:
The decisions and judgments made by the Health Services Research Analyst are central to the timely
development and completion of health services research and policy analysis undertaken by OSI and can
negatively impact the reputation of UNSOM and University and cause loss of funding.

4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written

 Advanced research methods, techniques, and data collection
 On-line survey development, including Survey Monkey
 Statistical sampling, economic modeling, and analysis techniques
 Hospital, health care industry, and health professions
Skills:



Design, development, and coordination of multiple health services research projects, including the
determination of appropriate methodologies, information sources, sampling strategies, and data
collection tools
Health services research data collection including the ability to collect, code, calculate, audit, verify, and
process data from a variety of primary and secondary sources
Database design, statistical analysis software, and Microsoft Office products
Ability to:
 Coordinate and complete multiple health services research projects in a self-directed manner
 Prepare technical reports, articles, policy documents, and other written materials based on primary and
secondary research findings and policy analysis in a self-directed manner
 Communicate information and research findings to multiple stakeholders and audiences clearly and
concisely in both oral and written form
 Supervise others by assigning and directing work
