1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Executive Director of Development (EDOD) works closely with and reports to the Assistant Vice
President of Development (ASVP). The EDOD is responsible for managing the unit development
activities necessary to identify and track prospects, potential and current, to support the University’s
development and campaign efforts at all levels of giving as it pertains to prospect identification,
research, management, tracking and screening. The position works with all areas of Development and
Alumni Relations (DAR) to focus on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of
prospects.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

40% - Human Resources Management
 Supervise the Directors of Development, Associate and Assistant Directors of Development
(DOD/ADOD/ADOD) in some or all of the following Colleges/Schools/Units:
Agriculture/Biotechnology/Natural Resources; Business; Cooperative Extension; Education;
Engineering; Intercollegiate Athletics; Journalism; KUNR, Liberal Arts, Libraries; School of
Medicine, Division of Health Sciences, Science and central DAR to include, but not be limited
to, University Scholarships
 Work with the Prospect Research staff on screening, prospect identification, assignment,
management/tracking and related issues
 Work with each DOD/ADOD/ADOD on a bi-monthly basis to review and discuss the overall
plans of the College/School/Unit/Program to ensure that prospects are being contacted in all
phases of the prospect management system (initial, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship),
proposals are being submitted, planned gifts are being solicited, college/school/unit/program
yearly goals are being met, individual monetary goal is being attained and surpassed, number
of assesed meetings are achieved.
 Work with each DOD/ADOD/ADOD to ensure that prospect contacts and strategies are being
entered on the central database, that prospects are assigned to the DOD/ADOD/ADOD and
that prospects are being moved along accodingly in terms of the prospect management
system for cultivation and solicitation purposes
 Evaluate the DOD/ADOD/ADODs, no less than once a year, according to the set metrics that
have been thoroughly explained do the DOD/ADOD/ADODs and outlined in their IPOs.
 Read and provide an assessment score on a monthly basis for each DOD/ADOD/ADODs
meeting Actions entered in the central database
 Work with the Dean/Directors of the Colleges/Schools/Units/Programs on their fund-raising
plans and overall prospect work
30% - Employee Development
 Work closely with the ASVP and AVP on issues and needs related to the central development
services - Alumni Relations; Annual Giving; Corporate/Foundation Relations; Donor Relations;
Planned Giving; University Events; IT, and UNR Foundation - as it relates to the prospect
management system
 With the ASVP, the EDOD develops a process and plan to educate and train the
DOD/ADOD/ADODs o be sure they are knowledgeable about the University and fund-raising
process and techniques

10% - Reports Administration
 Provide reports to the President, Vice President of Development & Alumni Relations,
Associate Vice President of Development & Alumni Relations, Assistant Vice President of
Development, Directors, Associate and Assistant Directors of Development and others as
needed
10% - Event Facilitation
 Work with other departments within the Division to strategically have prospects, both potential
and current, participate in appropriate events such as dinners, athletic events, tailgates,
concerts, lectures, etc. so they become better acquainted with the University and how their
philanthropic support can have a positive impact on the faculty, programs and students
 Facilitate between the DOD/ADOD/ADODs , the ASVP,and the University’s Annual Fund
program the most productive division of each areas alumni to strategically pinpoint giving

 Design, execute and monitor effectiveness of a prospect management system to track
prospects from identification, initial contact, cultivation, solicitation and finally into stewardship
to provide a reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient and information
on prospects is reliable
 Support efforts within Development & Alumni Relations to meet fundraising goals and other
development objectives
5% - Gift Solication
 Cultivate and solicit majors gifts of $50,000 or more
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The EDOD possesses mid-level autonomy in decision-making related to the University of Nevada,
Reno’s development program. In conjunction with the VP of DAR, AVP of DAR, ASVP of DAR,
Deans, Senior Administration and faculty/staff across the University, this position coordinates,
manages, and strategically oversees fundraising goals, projects, policies and procedures specifically
related to the DOD/ADOD/ADODs. The EDOD has public visibility; and the decisions and judgments
made impact the reputation and credibility of the University, DAR and the University Foundation.
Impact:
The identification and management of prospects is essential for the development process to be
successful. All departments within DAR utilize the prospect management and research system to
strategically identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects. The Executive Director of Development
manages the DOD/ADOD/ADODs, sets the metrics, in partnership with the ASVP, by which the
DOD/ADOD/ADODs are evaluated. The decisions and judgments made by the EDODdirectly impacts
the fundraising process. Fundraising’s success provides the University with the necessary support to
provide an outstanding educational environment for its students and to uphold its reputation as a
national Tier 1 University with its students, parents, alumni and friends.
