1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) on the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) campus is a
growing organization that is increasingly active in improving the graduate student experience through
a range of programs that contribute to graduate student retention. The Director, Graduate Student
Services, is responsible for the training of the GSA Council and Executive Board, fiscal advisement of
the GSA accounts, advising GSA on liability, constitutionality, and legality of actions, supervision of
GSA officers that hold graduate assistantships, and supervision of GSA office staff and graduate
student assistants. The position is also the department’s chief budget officer who manages all
GSA accounts and works with students on reimbursements, purchasing, and all funding
issues.

40% - Advisor to Graduate Student Association Executive Board and Council of
Representatives
 Advises the Executive Board and members of the GSA Council on constitutionality of
decisions and liability issues stemming from proposed actions
 Provides training to the GSA Executive Board and Council that reflects good business and
communications practices, and enables GSA to conduct effective meetings, and ensure
continuity of programs and services
 Coordinates leadership workshops and retreats for the GSA Executive Council and Council of
Representatives
 Keeps GSA Executive Board and Council apprised of federal, state, and local laws and
statutes, including UNR Bylaws, and Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Code and
Administrative Manual procedures
20% - Program Management
 Assists GSA in coordinating with the various GSA recognized clubs and organizations.
 Provides advisement to GSA recognized clubs and organizations on budget, liability,
fundraising, and other issues, and on university policies and procedures
 Provides management and training for GSA programs (household items, food pantry, etc.)
 Supervises the GSA Executive Board members who hold graduate assistantships, as well as
graduate student volunteers who coordinate GSA programs, such as the Household Items
Program, the Food Pantry, etc.
 Supervises the GSA office staff and graduate student assistants
 Coordinates implementation of the Travel Grant Program, including all fiscal management,
assisting students with paperwork and reimbursement processes
 Coordinates implementation of all GSA scholarship and grant programs, including the
Financial Crisis Grant, the Medical Hardship Scholarship, the Childcare Scholarship, and all
merit-base scholarships and research grants awarded at the annual Spring Awards Program
20% - Graduate Student Services
 Works with the campus community (Graduate School, Student Services, Career Development,
etc.) on assessing, developing, and implementing programs and services to assist and aid
graduate students in the successful attainment of higher education degrees
 Coordinates workshops for graduate students to provide knowledge and information that may
assist in the retention and successful completion of the student’s advanced degree

Mediates as needed between graduate student groups, or individual graduate students, and
university/community entities, and makes appropriate referrals
Provides assistance to new incoming and returning graduate students regarding issues such
as housing, child care, and other non-academic matters
20% - Budget Management
 Prepares and maintains annual budget for all GSA accounts, including student
activities fund, travel fund, scholarship accounts, club accounts, and revenue accounts
 Prepares semi-monthly reports on P-Card purchasing
 Works with students to provide funding and reimbursements for travel expenses, club
expenditures, and scholarships and grant expenditures
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
The activities of GSA profoundly impact the UNR graduate student community. Changes in policies
impacting students such as fee increases, financial support through assistantships, insurance
coverage, etc., often depend on the support of graduate student government. GSA, and the
represented graduate student population, is an integral factor in UNR’s continued growth as a
research institution. The Director, Graduate Student Services, is a key component in coordinating
these activities, and in creating a vibrant, enriching environment for graduate students. The Director
holds a critical position in maintaining open lines of communication and cooperation between the
graduate student government and the campus community.
GSA programs impact graduate students’ lives and their education. Decisions of the GSA Council
greatly impact the type of services provided to graduate students. The advice of the Director,
Graduate Student Services, is essential to maintaining services and programs at their optimal level.
Cooperation and collaboration between GSA and other campus entities allows for strategic planning
for graduate students and facilitates the implementation of strategic goals that help address problems
that may arise in the graduate student community.

Reason for Contact
Daily contact with UNR graduate students on an individual basis,
and in groups. Most contacts are of an advisory nature, although
at times personal counseling may ensue.
Weekly contact with various areas of administration (e.g. Graduate
School, Student Services), often including GSA executive officers,
and administrative and academic faculty, to discuss impact of GSA
decisions on other areas of the university; contacts with academic
faculty who serve as advisors of graduate students and of
recognized graduate student clubs and organizations; frequent
contacts with the budget office, controller’s office, accounts
payable/receivable, travel and purchasing, and Student Health
Center, and Office of International Students and Scholars are all
necessary to ensure proper fiscal and business management of
GSA.
Periodic communication related to NSHE Board Meetings, Nevada
Open Meeting Law, and mediation of issues between GSA leaders
Reason for Contact
Periodic contact with Reno and Northern Nevada community
service groups and businesses to coordinate the facilitation of
GSA programs and fundraising efforts.
