Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Coordinator, Simulation Education (OME), organizes student and resident learning activities in concert with the faculty and under the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Medical Education in the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) in Las Vegas. This individual works with faculty to develop educational activities in the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Simulation Center that meet the specific learning needs of a variety of learners to include high fidelity simulations, use of task trainers and use of standardized patients. This position works closely in a collaborative relationship with the Office of Graduate Medical Education (OGME), the Office of Medical Education (OME), the NSHE Simulation Center of Southern Nevada staff, teaching faculty and learners. Development and establishment of curricular activities as well as evaluative processes of learners is a critical role for the Coordinator. 2. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 50% - Development and Curricular Integration of Simulation Activities Assist faculty in the development of educational activities for students and residents that will support integration into discipline specific curricula Helps design cases to be used for high fidelity simulation and tests them out on the simulators to ensure they flow and meet educational needs of the program (clerkship or residency) Add newly designed cases to the clinical case database; participate in the design of cases to be used in teaching settings with standardized patients Participate, with Coordinator, Simulated Patient Education (Reno), in design and implementation of cases to be used in high-stakes examinations of students Helps faculty design procedural teaching sessions using task trainers and other equipment Utilize a database for tracking virtual clinical cases, standardized patients, simulation activities, clinicians involved in clinical assessment, and curricular integration Collaborate with the Coordinator, Simulated Patient Education (OME) to meet educational needs of clerkships and residency programs across both UNSOM campuses Participate in the planning, organization and implementation of clinical assessment evaluations 25% - Recruit,Train and Evaluate Standardized Patients Recruit and interview standardized patients for purposes of assessment and training/teaching Coordinate and conduct training of standardized patients for low and high stakes student exams and teaching sessions includes standardized patient orientations on policies and procedures of the program Schedule and supervise standardize patient roles in discipline specific curricula Develop evaluation tools with special attention to validity and reliability issues, evaluate standardized patients’ performances and provide standardized patients with feedback Assist faculty in the design of standardized patient cases 25% - Administrative Management Collaborate with standardized patient education organizations such as Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) to plan and manage testing Meet with clinical faculty to promote the use of simulation including standardized patients, high fidelity simulation and task trainers within their curricula, noting the benefits of this type of clinical experience Position Description – Coordinator, Simulation Education-UNSOM Page 3 Coordinate with NSHE Simulation Center support staff to ensure scheduling of simulation exercises and other details needed with integration of simulation into clerkship and residency curricula Represent UNSOM inin NSHE Simulation Center staff (sim-techs, lab assistant and director) administrative meetings Serve as a liaison between associate dean, NSHE Simulation Center staff and UNSOM faculty in establishing UNSOM simulation activities 3. This position impacts the quality of medical education and training for students and residents. This individual has the ability to make decisions independently as necessary as well as seek additional guidance from the faculty and the associate dean. It provides for the development of procedural skills (task trainers), enhancement of professionalism, patient care and communication skills (standardized patients) and introduction of additional measures of patient safety (high fidelity simulation). These experiences in competency development for both students and residents are critical to improved skill levels and have a high impact in these learners’ education. Therefore, the decisions and judgments of this position directly affect the educational process. Critical judgments and decisions in recruitment and training of standardized patients and in the implementation of scenarios/cases will also impact the educational outcomes of the learners. 4.
