1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the

The Senior Outreach Services (SOS) program within the Sanford Center for Aging (SCA) provides
services to meet the growing needs of Washoe County’s homebound seniors. The Coordinator is
responsible for planning and coordinating project activities, making decisions on budget expenditure,
and tracking project progress and results. The Coordinator duties also include project coordination,
volunteer coordination, communication, and budget management for the SOS programs. The position
manages professional relationships with the SCA, project participants and funding agencies. The
position serves as principal investigator for the project and is responsible for development of
competitive proposals, continuation proposal and all project reporting. The position coordinates
volunteers and supervises staff while reporting to the Director, Sanford Center for Aging (SCA). The
position works in partnership with the Project Director, Volunteer Programs (SCA) and other related
program leaders within the SCA.

50% - Project Coordination and Leadership
 Serve as the principal investigator (PI) on named grants awarded to the SCA Collaborate with
internal and external partners to negotiate and implement project goals
 Schedule the complete work plan and maintain the paperwork of the project
 Prepare presentations and meet with project clients to discuss and carry out project mission
 Work with community partners and funding agencies to identify clients to participate in the
project, recruit volunteers, and coordinate volunteers for the outreach services in conjunction
with RSVP
 Participate as a coach and observer with students and volunteers on the project
 Develop and deliver training activities as required by the project
 Ensure grant requirements are met
 Lead the SOS Ambassador advisory group to develop programs targeted to SOS volunteers,
clients, students and healthcare professionals
 Develop new projects and programs
20% - Budget Management and Reporting
 Ensure that all expenditures for the project budget follow the policies and guidelines set by the
granting agency to maximize the delivery of project deliverables as outlined within the project
scope of work
 Prepare and submit required reports in a timely manner to ADSD, SCA, and Sponsored
Projects
 Compile needs assessment, outcome evaluation and other data
 Design data collection instruments and process to gather and assess evidence-based program
data to be used for future fundraising and grant proposals
10% - Communication
 Communicate and resolve issues about contractual and implementation aspects of the
project(s) with participants and Washoe County Senior Services (WCSS), Aging and Disability
Services Division (ADSD) and SCA

Provide updates and information about the project to relevant stakeholders
Provide program management by screening clients, matching clients with volunteers,
reviewing health status and service needs of clients with volunteers and connecting with
referral agencies
Market SOS program to community organizations
10% - Supervision
 Manage assigned projects ensuring daily assignments are completed
 Supervise staff who implement policies and/or practices of the project
 Supervise and coordinate the efforts of SOS volunteers and clients
 Develop inter-professional collaboration and partnerships with university/college programs or
community programs e.g. Orvis School of Nursing’s Campus Community Outreach (3rd year
nursing students)
10% - Grant Writing & Fundraising
 Develop and recommend ideas for future projects to the SCA Director
 Develop budgets and proposals
 Identify potential funding sources and solicit funds
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Coordinator requires independent working skills and the ability to make decisions on a daily basis
within guidelines of the program without direct supervision. Most daily decisions are made
independently and immediately. The position provides training and guidance to all service providers
under the program. The incumbent works with grant budgets and must be able to ensure compliance
with specific rules and regulations and accurate effort reporting for each grant or contract. The
Coordinator consults with the SCA Director on more complex budget or project implementation
changes and issues.
Impact:
The program requires strong participation in the Washoe County community. Accordingly, poor
oversight of volunteers, a lack of training, or errors in matching of volunteers to clients can negatively
impact the reputation of the SCA and the University of Nevada, Reno. Effective program leadership
improves the quality of life and in some cases assists in meeting the healthcare needs of frail seniors
in the community.
