1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Regional Coordinator coordinates activities of the Western Sustainability and Pollution Prevention
Network (WSPPN) and implements the project scope of work. This involves facilitating
communication and information dissemination among the (over 200) pollution prevention programs in
Region 9, coordination with other national Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Pollution
Prevention Resource Centers (P2Rx-7 centers), and development and/or maintenance of website
resources and placement of other information on the WSPPN P2Rx website. The position is located
in the Business Environmental Program (BEP), Business Services Group (BSG, aka Nevada Small
Business Development Center (NSBDC)), within the College of Business Administration (COBA),
University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). The position may be located anywhere within EPA Region 9 in
order to best meet Network needs. This position is consistent with the University’s outreach and
national recognition efforts. It enhances the profile of UNR and the BSG/NSBDC with EPA, Small
Business Administration (SBA), Department of Energy (DOE) and other pollution prevention/
sustainability programs in the region and nation.

55% - Program Coordination
 Coordinate with P2/Environmental/Sustainability Programs in California, Arizona, Hawaii, and
Nevada to assess needs, program activities, collect program outcome information, support
special grant initiatives, develop and deliver webinars, and populate the WSPPN website with
useful P2 information
 Coordinating and assisting other P2 training or mentoring activities in Region 9
 Seek collaborative efforts with network members to build projects and activities
 Participate in national Pollution Prevention Resource Exchange (P2Rx) coordination and
planning activities to include monthly conference calls and administrative group meetings
 Develop national P2Rx funding proposals that include WSPPN funding for specific work
project components that may result from coordination and planning activities
30% - Event Planning and Coordination
 Plan, organize, advertise, and host an annual WSPPN conference. This includes developing
an agenda and organizing speakers and moderators
 Distribute advertisements and managing a web-based and on-location registration process.
 Manage disbursement of available travel support funds
 Secure facilities and negotiate facility rates
 Support WSPPN Steering Committee; organize two meetings per year and provide information
and communication to steering Committee members; and manage the process for committee
appointment
10% - Communication
 Coordinate with P2 programs nationally to compile sector based pollution prevention
information and develop and/or maintain website resources on the WSPPN website
5% - Reporting
 Prepare project reports and compile P2 results and evaluation results, either on a semi-annual
or quarterly basis, based on EPA grant conditions

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom
This position is funded by grants from the US EPA to coordinate WSPPN Network services, provide
information dissemination through the WSPPN P2Rx website and coordinate with the other P2Rx
national centers. The position works in cooperation with other P2 programs and under the direction of
the Manager, Business Environmental Program and the Pollution Prevention Program Manager.
Incumbent follows guidelines to choose appropriate methods/course of action with approval by
supervisor at milestones and when making variations in guidelines or process; limited decision making
authority.
Impact
The Coordinator’s decisions and judgments, and the results of work performed will affect the
perception of EPA and pollution prevention programs nationally on the quality and performance
capabilities of the Nevada Small Business Development Center, and UNR. This performance will
impact the ability of the NSBDC to continue to secure future grant funding for the WSPPN and
additional funds for future network growth and additional service delivery. This performance will also
impact the NSBDC’s, and UNR’s ability to secure EPA funding for other program services focused on
Nevada’s business community.
