Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the University.
Attach an organizational chart for the division which reflects the position in it as well as
those supervised in the department.
The Associate Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations works closely with the
VP of Development and Alumni Relations/Executive Director of the Foundation in strategic
planning for the division, the Foundation, and Alumni Association in organizing and
implementing the comprehensive development function. This position is part of a larger
team responsible for building a sense of community, pride and commitment between the
University and those it serves, and for creatively using state-of-the art technology to deliver
programs and services that obtain high stakeholder satisfaction levels. This position
manages and coordinates capital campaigns, major gifts, annual giving, corporate and
foundation support, planned giving, volunteer participation, prospect research, university
events, stewardship, information systems, alumni relations, and financial reporting.
This position will focus on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major
donors and work closely and collaboratively with the Vice President, President, senior
administrators, Foundation Trustees, Alumni Board members and faculty to enhance
support for the university.
The Associate Vice President will be expected to personally solicit major gifts in the
$100,000 figure range and larger.
This position may require extensive travel to satellite offices within the state.

Strategic Planning and Development 40% •
Develops and implements strategic organizational initiatives to increase funding for
the university. .

Establishes standards for the development of annual operating plans for
development programs in coordination with a campus wide goal. Oversees the translation
of the university's mission and goals into a development program with stated objectives and
measures of achievement.
•
Provides direction to senior administrative staff, deans, and directors in
strengthening the fund-raising capacities of their units or colleges and engages constituency
based development officers and other staff in strategic planning, goal setting, and
performance management for fund raising, prospect identification, cultivations, solicitation
and stewardship. Duties to include: designing and implementing a capital campaign,
establishing volunteer campaign committees, and executing the campaign.

Resolution of policy issues with regard to giving opportunities, donor recognition,
endowment levels, cultivation, strategies, reporting and stewardship. Provides leadership to
various staff committees charged with dealing with policy issues.

Ensures volunteer committees for the various academic and campus units are
integrated with broad based volunteer structures for campus wide programs. The Associate
Vice President also serves as the Associate Director and Secretary of the UNR Foundation
Cultivation of Gifts 20%
•
Responsible for solicitation and cultivation of gifts of $100,000 and larger.
•
Position may play a key role in closing on large gifts in coordination with
development staff.
•
Responsible for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors and
work closely and collaboratively with the Vice President, President, senior administrations,
Foundation Trustees, Alumni Board members and faculty to enhance private support for the
university.

Establish, organize and implement a comprehensive development function within
the university for a university wide capital campaign.
Personnel & Policy 40%
•
Responsible for the management of human resources within the division. Ensure
compliance with personnel policies and procedures within the guidelines of the UCCSN and
State of Nevada.

Responsible for the coordination of the annual evaluation process of the division.
•
Responsible for the development of organizational policies, procedures, and
protocols. Supervises all development & alumni relations functions, including information
systems, records, research, prospect management and tracking functions, finance, and
events and stewardship. Duties include reviewing and signing all personnel documents as
designated appointing authority for division.

Describe how the decisions and judgments made by this position and the results of work
performed impact the department, division, and/or University as a whole.
The development division is critical to the University's future ability to raise funds that are
not available from the State. The decisions and judgments made by this position will have a
direct impact on the success of fundraising efforts. This position has a particularly high level
of public visibility and the decisions and judgments made will impact the reputation and
credibility of the University, Foundation and Alumni Association.

Significant record in managing fund-raising programs and demonstrated involvement
in the strategic design and implementation of capital campaigns.

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of development at a major
research university and substantive years of progressive responsiblitiy and experience in the
profession.

Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement development programs of
comparable size and complexity including the ability to envision and articulate future
direction.

Strong communications skills to express, both orally and in writing the mission of the
campus and its programs.

Demonstrated experience managing the relationship between development and
alumni relations. Must have a clear understanding of how development and alumni relations
work together toward a common goal through different programs.

Must be a self-directed team player who demonstrates skill, commitment and vigor
to implement goals for advancing the institution.

Must possess strong organizational, human resource, and interpersonal skills with a
team-based approach to leadership.

Demonstrated partnership with volunteer boards, university events, and alumni
relations.

Knowledge of, and preferably experience with, institution related foundations, gift
stewardship, and alumni communications such as institutional publications.
10.
A record of progressive and significant leadership experience, preferably in higher
education and in public university settings.

A record of involvement with professional organizations in the development field.

A commitment to continued professional development and to diversity.
13.
Knowledge of and a commitment to the use of information technology to support
fund raising.
14.
Knowledge of, and ability to use, word processing and spreadsheets for reporting.

Regular contact with the President, Vice Presidents, Deans, Department Chairs, Directors,

A master's or bacehlor degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education, necessary for a person entering this position.
Master's degree and seven years (bachelor's & 10 years ) of progressively responsible
experience in the development field to include five years which were in a
college/university or non-profit environment and four years of supervisory experience.
Experience with development and capital campaigns preferred.
