The Assistant Vice President, Enterprise & Innovation (AVP-EI) is responsible for the
commercialization of the University’s research, artistic, scholarly, and innovation discoveries
and activities. The incumbent manages the University’s intellectual property and enterprise
endeavors as well as develops business relationships with private and public entities. The AVPEI provides leadership for advancing and managing the University’s Innovation Center, the
Nevada Center for Applied Research, and the state-wide Nevada Industrial Excellence (NVIE)
program, which assists businesses to become premier industry leaders in the manufacturing,
construction, and mining industries.

45% - Enterprise and Commercialization
 Collaborate with the Vice President, Research & Innovation (VPRI) to develop strategic
plans for the Office of the VPRI and the Office of Enterprise and Innovation
 Oversee the operation and management of the Nevada Research Foundation
 Identify areas of University research and entrepreneurship for commercialization and
enterprise creation (start-ups and spin-offs)
 Identify, create, and maintain relationships with corporate research partners and
governmental agencies; locate industries that may benefit from the University’s products
 Work with the VPRI and the Associate Vice President, Research (AVP-R) in assessing
market potential and commercial viability of UNR and Desert Research Institute (DRI)
technologies
 Work with General Counsel and external patent attorneys to determine whether
intellectual property protection is advisable
 Coordinate and work with the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) and General Counsel
in drafting and reviewing agreements, such as material transfer agreements, non-

disclosure agreements, license agreements, inter-institutional agreements, and research
agreements
Work with the VPRI and the AVP-R to identify potential licensees and research partners;
work with General Counsel to execute appropriate agreements
Complete other projects and tasks as assigned by the VPRI
30% - Innovation Center
 Oversee Innovation Center activities; supervise the Manager, Innovation Center
 Work with the Manager, Innovation Center to establish innovative research endeavors,
manage innovation events, and conduct outreach to business partners who may benefit
from utilizing the center
 Collaborate with the Manager to secure funding
 Implement the Innovation Center’s strategic plan
15% - Nevada Center for Applied Research (NCAR)
 Oversee NCAR activities; supervise the Director, NCAR
 Collaborate with the AVP-R to develop strategies and ensure sustainability of the NCAR
 Work with the Director, NCAR and the Assistant Vice President for Research
Administration (AVP-RA) to manage fee-for-service, corporate events, and conduct
outreach to business partners who may benefit from utilizing the center
 Implement NCAR’s strategic plan
10% - Nevada Industry Excellence (NVIE)
 Provide direction and be a resource to the Director, NVIE
 Collaborate with NVIE to develop strategic initiatives which align with the Office of
Enterprise & Innovation’s goals to maximize commercialization, research, and innovation
 Work with the Director, NVIE to accomplish program goals
 Collaborate with the Director, NVIE to secure current and future funding through State
appropriations, grant programs, federal matching funds, project management fees, and
local and private support
 Work with the Director, NVIE to establish and accomplish statewide goals, objectives,
and quantifiable performance measurements

The Assistant Vice President, Enterprise & Innovation works autonomously with minimal
oversight to manage the operations of the Innovation Center, Nevada Center for Applied
Research, and the Nevada Industry Excellence. The AVP-EI will lead the University’s efforts to
foster innovation and advance the commercialization of the University and DRI’s discoveries.
The AVP-EI has the responsibly to identify potential areas of enterprise and innovation
expansion and has the authority to create and maintain relationships with industry and research
partners and governmental entities. The position provides leadership in research, innovation,
financial, administrative, and policy development decisions in order to ensure the success and
credibility of the Office of the VPRI and the reputation of the University.

describe the supervisory consultation at the highest level.
The Assistant Vice President, Enterprise & Innovation works closely with Vice President of
Research and Innovation to establish goals relating to the operations of each functional area
under the AVP-EI’s supervision. The AVP-EI works collaboratively with AVP-R and the AVP-RA
to achieve the shared vision and the mission of the Office of the VPRI. Arrangements and
agreements must first be discussed with the Vice President, Research & Innovation prior to
establishment.
