1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Assistant Vice President of Development (ASVP) works closely with, as well as reports to, the
Associate Vice President (AVP) of Development and Alumni Relations and the Vice President (VP) of
Development and Alumni Relations/Executive Director of the Foundation in strategic planning for the
division in organizing and implementing the comprehensive development function. The position is
part of a larger team responsible for building a sense of community, pride and commitment between
the University and those it serves, and for creatively using state-of-the art technology to deliver
programs and services that obtain high stakeholder satisfaction levels. The position manages major
gifts, annual giving, planned giving, prospect research and corporate and foundation relations. Some
participation in the coordination of university events and alumni relations is also expected.
The position focuses on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors and
works closely and collaboratively with the Associate Vice President, Vice President, President, senior
administrators, Foundation Trustees, Alumni Board members and faculty to enhance support for the
University. The Assistant Vice President is expected to personally solicit major gifts in the $100,000
figure range and larger.

30% - Strategic Planning and Development
 Develops and implements strategic organizational initiatives to increase funding for the
University
 Provides direction to senior administrative staff, deans, and directors in strengthening the
fund-raising capacities of their units or colleges and engages constituency based development
officers and other staff in strategic planning, goal setting, and performance management for
fund raising, prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
 Provides direction to the Executive Director of Development (EDOD) as well as specific central
directors in strengthening the fundraising capacities of their areas, including strategic planning,
goal setting, and performance management for fundraising, prospect identification, cultivation,
solicitation and stewardship
30% - Cultivation of Gifts
 Responsible for solicitation and cultivation of gifts of $100,000 and larger
 Position may play a key role in closing on large gifts in coordination with development staff
 Responsible for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors and works
closely and collaboratively with the Vice President, President, Deans, Senior Administration,
Foundation Trustees, and Faculty to enhance private support for the University
 Provides assistance to the AVP with regards to comprehensive campaigns
 In collaboration with the VP, coordinates and manages the prospect management and
research work as well as strategic planning for the University's President as it relates to
fundraising
 In collaboration with the VP, works with the President, Deans, Senior Administration,
Foundation Trustees, and Faculty to strategically implement fundraising projects including high
level proposal preparation, such as capital projects, that impact the University overall as well

as specific Colleges/Schools/Units/Programs. Requires interaction with the President, VP,
Deans, Senior Administration, Facilities and community-based companies, foundations and
individuals
Manages major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, prospect research and corporate and
foundation relations; some participation in the coordination of university events and alumni
relations is also expected
40% - Personnel and Policy
 Supervises the EDOD
 Supervises, in conjunction with the EDOD, some Directors of Development, Associate
Directors of Development and Assistant Directors of Development in some or all of the
following Colleges/Schools/Units/Programs: Agriculture/Biotechnology/Natural Resources;
Business; Cooperative Extension; Education; Engineering; Intercollegiate Athletics;
Journalism; KUNR, Liberal Arts, Libraries; School of Medicine, Division of Health Sciences,
Science and central DAR to include, but not be limited to, University Scholarships
 Coordinate the annual evaluation process of the directors of development and any areas
within DAR under management including, but not limited to major gifts, annual giving, planned
giving, prospect research, and corporate and foundation relations
 Leads and supervises annual giving
 Supervises corporate and foundation relations, planned giving and prospect research
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The ASVP possesses a high level of autonomy in decision-making related to the University of
Nevada, Reno’s development program. In conjunction with the President, Vice Presidents, Deans,
Senior Administration and faculty/staff across the University, the position coordinates, manages, and
strategically implements fundraising projects, policies and procedures.
Impact:
DAR is critical to the University's ability to raise funds that are not available from the State. The
decisions and judgments made by the Assistant Vice President will have a direct impact on the
success of all fundraising efforts whether short- or long-term in all areas of development including
annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations as well as all subsidiary
development functions including but not limited to prospect research. A strong fundraising program
directly impacts all aspects, members and users of the University, including students, parents, alumni,
faculty/staff and the community at large. Everything from scholarships, faculty support and capital
building projects to program needs is impacted by fundraising. A strong fundraising program provides
the University with the ability to obtain the amenities that assist with recruitment and retention of
students. The ASVP has a high level of public visibility; the decisions and judgments made impact the
reputation and credibility of the University, DAR and the University Foundation.
The actions and decisions of the ASVP directly impact student and faculty recruitment, research
program development and investment by donors, foundations, governmental organizations and other
funding sources.

4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge of:
 Federal and state laws affecting charitable solicitations
 Best practices for fundraising professionals in a higher education environment
 Working knowledge of the principles and practices of development at a major research
university and substantive years of progressive responsibility and experience in the profession
 The relationship between development and alumni relations. Must have a clear understanding
of how development and alumni relations work together toward a common goal through
different programs
 Knowledge of computer applications and systems relating to the use of information technology
to support fund raising with relational databases
 Knowledge of, and preferably experience with, institution-related foundations, gift stewardship,
and alumni communications such as institutional publications
