Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Assistant Director, Grounds Services, is a key member of the Facilities Maintenance Services leadership team in Facilities Services Division (FSD). The Assistant Director for Grounds Services is responsible for developing and maintaining a strategic plan for University of Nevada, Reno landscape spaces on the main campus, Redfield Campus, and statewide locations. The position oversees grounds maintenance, irrigation, motor pool, small construction, and trash/recycle crews. The position reports to the Senior Director, Facilities Maintenance Services. 2. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 50% - Supervision and Leadership Provide direction, assign work, provide feedback, and supervise the grounds maintenance, irrigation, motor pool, small engine, small construction, and trash/recycle crews Guide, train, and give technical assistance to supervisors and employees; inspect work to ensure maintenance of quality standards, safe work practices, and effective resource utilization Manage daily operational activities, conduct problem solving, troubleshooting, and resolve personnel issues Develop cohesive work teams, united behind common departmental and university goals Identify and develop operating standards and safe work practices for grounds maintenance tasks Develop annual grounds maintenance schedule detailing tasks, times and frequencies 40% - Operations and Project Management Direct the campus snow removal plan to ensure safe and timely access to campuses Direct University trash and recycle program; develop long term trash and recycle plan Manage the University Motor Pool; fleet maintenance, small engine shop, and vehicle and specialized equipment replacement plans Manage the planning and scheduling function for grounds maintenance work orders; develop comprehensive preventative maintenance program for areas of responsibility Direct planning and support for large campus events Manage landscape construction projects Establish irrigation plans and monitor water usage Work with arborists and other professionals to develop campus tree risk assessment plan to include tree disease, pruning techniques, removal and replacement Develop and oversee grounds maintenance budgets, including the development of deferred maintenance, equipment replacement, and capital improvement plans Develop contingency plans and organize response for campus emergencies, including large snow removal, floods, and sewer upsets 10% - Strategic Planning Develop and maintain the long term landscape master plan Develop and maintain contacts with various campus community members affected by or concerned with the quality, safety and appearance of the landscaped spaces Position Description – Assistant Director, Grounds Services Page 3 Design, plan and coordinate landscape improvements using information on available plant material, available level of maintenance and landscape master plan Create plans and designs for pathways, small structures, decorative features, flowers, shrubs, trees and open space including irrigation and wetland considerations Consult with other professionals as needed (i.e., civil engineers, hydrologists, building architects, etc.) Provide technical leadership and guidance through review of proposed design criteria Participate on and coordinate with the Campus Arboretum Board Participate as a member of the Facilities Maintenance Services Management Team, assist with daily operational activities in the department and with the development of the short and long term strategic goals 3. Level of Freedom: Goals for the campus landscapes are developed with campus-wide input. Decisions are made on space utilization, products and processes used. The incumbent makes independent decisions regarding prioritization and assignment of jobs to staff, personnel decisions, and budget management. This includes time critical actions (snow removal, flooding, sewer problems, special events, etc.) that require independent judgment and immediate decisions. The Senior Director, Facilities Maintenance Services, is consulted on complex personnel issues, resource needs and for final approvals on projects above a predetermined threshold. Impact: Effective management of emergency procedures is critical to employee safety and protection of property. Poor decisions or lack of preparedness can put employees, students, visitors and property in peril. People enjoy attractively designed gardens, residential areas and workspaces. The campus is large-scale, composed of many spaces used for a multitude of purposes. The planning, condition and maintenance of these outdoor environments directly impact the perceptions of students, parents, donors, community members, employees and other campus visitors. Accordingly, the Assistant Director for Grounds Services will make a very visible impact to all campus visitors and thereby impact the reputation of the University. 4.
