1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Area Director, Residential Life, is responsible for developing a balanced program of social,
educational, and recreational activities for residents and for training and supervision of undergraduate,
graduate, and professional staff for assigned residence halls. Responsibilities include resident
discipline, development of hall governments and other student groups, reporting repairs and
maintenance needs, and the general administration of the residential area. The Area Director advises
staff and refers students regarding diverse problems ranging from academic support to suicide or
other acute emotional disturbances. The incumbent is required to live on campus, maintain full-time
office hours, attend/facilitate evening/weekend programs and training, and respond to
emergency/crisis situations. The position reports to the Director, Resident Life, Food and Housing
Services.

35% - Staff Supervision
 With other Residence Life staff and Human Resources, develop job descriptions and hiring
criteria for residence hall staffing; participate in the search/hiring process of staff
 Assist in the development and presentation of training programs, teaching academic classes;
conduct orientation activities and fall and spring training, multicultural and diversity training,
and on-going training
 Directly supervise student staff, full-time Resident Directors and/or Graduate Assistant
Resident Directors and assist with the supervision of student desk attendants, resident
assistants and/or community assistants of other residence halls
 Conduct meetings with staff, including individual conferences as needed, and evaluate staff
performance throughout the year; conduct formal evaluations at least once per semester
 Ensure Graduate Assistant/Resident Director staff supervise and evaluate student staff
members in accordance with University and Department policies and procedures
25% - Student Development and Programming
 Monitor assigned programming accounts
 Ensure student staff and Graduate Assistant/Resident Directors develop, implement,
coordinate and evaluate an ongoing series of inclusive programs, activities, initiatives, and
interactions to support the community development model
 Advise Hall Governments through Resident Directors and/or Graduate Assistant Resident
Directors and assist with leadership development programs sponsored by the department or
University
 Assist with the implementation of department and University sponsored retention programs to
include, but not limited to, academic intervention, academic recognition, academic
programming, Mapworks, and orientation
 Coordinate the implementation of at least one of the following department initiatives:1)
Advisement of the Residence Hall Association including individual and group student
leadership development, implementation of programs and activities, conference attendance,
and fundraising; 2) Coordination of all residence hall student staff selection, training, and
evaluation processes; 3)Supervision of the day-to-day management of Living Learning
Communities at the hall level

10% - Housing Operations
 Coordinate, with student staff and Graduate Assistant/Resident Directors, front desk
operations that are open 24 hours per day to provide service and security for residents
 Assist with winter/summer housing, summer conferences, living learning communities,
program planning for the academic year
 Follow up on maintenance or housekeeping needs and ensure direct reports are performing
housekeeping inspections on routine basis, maintaining key control following departmental
policy, sending status reports as needed of room occupancy and card/lock changes,
performing regular desk log entries, and responding to coordinate emergency maintenance
services after assessing the situation and making decision on the appropriate action
10% - Crisis Response and Counseling
 Provide response to situations that develop in the residence halls or involve residence hall
students which include emotional distress, discipline violations, threat of harm to self or others,
accidents, serious injury or death, intolerance to diversity, physical or mental illness
 Provide “on call” crisis response and consultation to duty staff
 Provide counseling, advising, conflict resolution, and referral to appropriate staff for students
with a wide variety of concerns ranging from substance abuse or serious emotional
disturbance to roommate conflicts or academic or administrative concerns; counseling may be
required at any time of availability
10% - Student Conduct
 Coordinate and implement departmental, University, and state policy related to discipline
 Train staff on disciplinary procedures and expectations
 Ensure Graduate Assistants/Resident Directors meet with all reported violators that reside in
assigned residential areas, i.e., confront policy violators; maintain documentation for each
case; provide appropriate information to other University officials; investigate facts and
establish sanctions on cases in which the student accepts responsibility; ensure staff utilize
the conduct process as an opportunity to educate and develop those students involved
 When necessary, hear appeals of students involved in conduct cases
10% - Department Administration
 Observe, evaluate, and provide feedback to the appropriate departmental staff on the quality
of the following: housing and dining facilities and their furnishings and equipment; service
provided by departmental staff, dining and custodial services of the department; programs
presented by the department; and/or materials distributed by the department
 Participate in the strategic planning of the short-term and long-term department initiatives
 Participate in setting departmental policy
 Other duties or department tasks as assigned by the Director to include but not limited to
judicial board, license appeals, recognition programs, safety committee, graduate and family
housing, programming committees, retention programs, recruitment, and other university
committees
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
Residential positions require that decisions are made 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The Area
Director makes most decisions independently relating to daily job responsibilities, i.e., supervision and
management of staff, crisis management, student conduct, and overall department administration.

The incumbent consults with the supervisor regarding more complex employee disciplinary actions or
crisis situations and collaborates on long-range goals of the unit.
Impact:
Few other departments are available on a 24-hour basis to assist in decision making, thus off-hour
decisions are critical to the public relations of the University and the success and safety of the
students. Residential living not only supplements and supports the student’s academic endeavors; it
also supports the individual emotionally and physically. The welfare and safety of students is of critical
importance. Creating opportunities for student involvement can have significant impact on student
retention.
