1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Director manages the W.M. Keck Earth Science and Mineral Engineering Museum, coordinates loaned exhibitions, and supervises museum employees and volunteers. The Director is responsible for daily operations, museum administration, exhibit layout and design, publicity, community education and outreach, grant writing and fund raising, collections management and development, and budget planning. The Museum is to be a dynamic resource that serves as a primary outreach mechanism to the public and the University of Nevada, Reno. The Museum Director reports to the Director of the
Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering (MSESE).

50% - Museum and Exhibit Management
Develop yearly plan for exhibit rotations; develop themes for displays
Create and design exhibit layouts in alignment with museum standards
Develop museum tours and earth science educational activities related to the exhibits for all grade level students and their teachers
Schedule and lead or supervise educational tours of the museum
Supervise student assistants and volunteers
Prepare and manage the annual museum budget
Coordinate museum supervision for open hours and special events
Manage museum security processes, including maintenance of the security system
25% - Public Relations and Museum Financial Support
Design and produce mineral and earth science informational posters and booklets for the general public
Develop publicity material for the museum and its exhibits
Arrange and coordinate receptions and events within the museum
Develop and promote use of the museum by university departments to increase visibility and enhance public relations
Coordinate with the MSESE Director to o Research and write grant proposals to support the museum; administer grants o Plan, organize, and implement fundraising activities for the museum o Participate in the donation solicitation and acceptance process, as appropriate o Develop and maintain a museum advisory board
25% - Permanent Collections Management and Development
Catalogue and curate new and existing minerals fossils, rocks, ores and mining artifacts
Maintain and update the museum website
Process loans from the collection, including transportation and return
Identify mineral specimen and exhibit needs
Build and maintain contact with mineral dealers, organizations and other museums to acquire and enhance exhibits
Maintain a comprehensive report of museum assets

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Museum Director makes independent decisions on exhibits and displays and the best use of museum space. The Director researches and prioritizes acquisitions, locates and submits proposals to funding sources, and develops plans for public use of the museum. The MSESE Director provides broad oversight and guidance on long-term goals.
Impact:
The Museum Director is the point of contact for use of the museum within and outside of the university. The Museum is the most public and visible outreach effort in the MSESE, impacting thousands of K-12 students and teachers annually through scheduled visits, and many more adults and children on casual visits. Positive public perception of the museum and future funding for the museum depend on the work of the Museum Director.

Geology, including rocks, minerals, basic paleontology and fossils
