1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Academic Advisor in the College of Education Advisement Center is responsible for assisting the
Manager, Advising, Recruitment and Retention with advisement, recruitment, and retention efforts for
students aiming for teacher licensure programs in the College of Education (COE). The Academic
Advisor is responsible for assisting the Manger with carrying out the mission of the Center, which is to
provide teacher education students with clear, current, and accurate information regarding all preservice teacher education programs from recruitment through graduation. This includes identifying
and contacting prospective students in conjunction with the Office for Prospective Students (OSP), the
Transfer Coordinator, and the General Advising Center for Undecided Students. The Academic
Advisor reports to the Manager, Advising, Recruitment and Retention.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

65% - Student Advisement
 Advise prospective students, students who are pre-majors, and teacher education
undergraduate majors in COE (approximately 350 majors and 1000 students)
 Make decisions about and implement student transfers and/or waivers of courses according to
faculty guidelines in order to ease student enrollment and to provide a smooth transition for
transfer students
20% - Program Administration
 Assist in preparation and maintenance of student records and databases
 Assist in determining probationary status and monitor and maintain records of progress of
students
 Provide insights and reports to faculty, Manager, and Dean’s office as needed, i.e., number of
undergraduates and graduate students in programs, etc.
 Conduct graduation audits and coordinate with faculty to resolve issues regarding readiness to
graduate or enter internship; report results to Manager
10% - Recruitment and Retention
 Assist with recruitment efforts, i.e., community outreach, Career Fairs, high schools, etc.,
throughout Nevada
 Conduct and monitor retention efforts
 Report results of recruitment and retention efforts to the Manager
5% - Scholarship Awards
 Assist with the scholarship award process for undergraduate education students
 Assist with the student notification and thank you note process
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.

The Academic Advisor is expected to exercise considerable professional judgment and take initiative
in collaborating with the Manager on issues impacting student advising, recruitment, and retention.

The position follows advising protocols set by faculty for curriculum and sequences of classes. The
Academic Advisor interprets faculty decisions concerning program requirements, course substitutes,
class overrides, and course sequences, and must work with the Manager in imparting correct and
current information and advice to students.
Impact:
The decisions and judgments made by the Specialist have a direct impact on the students through
advice given them. Improper decisions and advice could lead to students being delayed in graduation
or taking unnecessary courses. Sound decisions and judgments have a positive effect on students,
the faculty, the programs, the college, and the university as a whole.
