Certificate of Proficiency in Digital Cinema
03/22/2013
Section I: Request
The Digital Media Department at UVU requests a Certificate of Proficiency in Digital Cinema effective
Spring 2014. This program was approved by the Board of Trustees on October 24, 2013.
Section II: Need
This certificate would provide students a solid understanding and hands-on experience in the new digital
cinema workflow skills necessary to manage digital cinema assets. It would also provide a background in
digital cinema production management methodology. This certificate is meant to be only 15 credits hours in
order to certify learners who need the most fundamental digital cinema skills as quickly as possible.
The Certificate of Proficiency in Digital Cinema certificate has two potential audiences. The first group
would be new students interested in digital cinema workflow and production. The second audience would
be professionals in the industry who would like to update their skills in digital cinema workflow and
production.
The Digital Media department expects many learners will want the quickest path possible to obtaining the
most current skills in the fundamental Digital Cinema workflow. This 15 credit hour certificate is also
designed for learners from foreign countries who have some basic skills but need to learn the particulars of
Digital Cinema tools and workflow in English.
Section III: Institutional Impact
No significant administrative or financial changes are anticipated if this certificate is offered on the main
UVU campus in Orem. There may be a modest increase in expense because of the need to hire adjunct
faculty who specifically understand the digital cinema workflow. There is also talk of this certificate being
offered with some classes at the Wasatch Campus in Heber. If that were the case, there would be some
expense to adapt some rooms at Wasatch to accommodate the courses. The Digital Media department
expects to handle any significant increase in demand at the main campus through lecturers and adjunct
faculty, so that no additional tenure-track faculty will be required to offer this certificate.
Section IV: Finances
All of the required courses exist currently; thus, no new courses or sections will be required to support the
Digital Cinema 15 credit hour certificate program. Funding to support the existing courses is already in
place; no new funds are required.
