This program was approved by the Utah Valley University Board of Trustees on January 15, 2015. Section II: Need The proposed minor will fill the need for students in majors such as business, education, behavioral science, digital media, computer science, and nursing to have a more in depth understanding of the complex processes involved in both effective and ineffective communication. This minor will increase almost any major’s marketability. UVU advisors respond to frequent requests for a minor especially from computer science majors. There are over 400 job titles in government postings that list communication and communication skills in the top ten skills taught by businesses. Given the widespread demand for good communicators, it is anticipated that students from across the campus will desire to add a minor in communication to their bachelor’s degree program. The courses are currently offered or proposed and will not require any additional course development. Section III: Institutional Impact A minor should increase enrollments slightly but not significantly. A number of students already take courses in the Communication Department as electives that could be used toward a minor. The current instructional programs could handle additional students. Courses will be delivered both face to face and online. No changes in faculty, staff, or extra facilities will be required. Section IV: Finances No additional courses or sections are needed for this minor. The current funding will fulfill the needs of this program change.
