Credit from this course is transferable to all colleges and universities. Contact the receiving institution for how the credits will be applied. A survey course designed to make music more meaningful. Studies melody, harmony, form, and rhythm together with historical and biographical information. Prerequisites This class is available to all high school juniors and seniors in good academic standing. High school prerequisites apply. There are no college prerequisites for this course. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student should have developed the following skills: Identify basic elements of music Identify the musical style periods Identify major composers of each style period Assessments You are required to attend two concerts this semester, and complete a two-page concert report for each one. The whole point of this project is to broaden your experience, so I would encourage you to attend something you have never attended before, such as an opera, a symphony orchestra, a choral concert, chamber concert, or solo recital. I will hand out a list of all concert dates and times. If you wish to attend a concert that is not on that list, you must clear it with me first. Keep in mind that only concerts that pertain to our course of study will be accepted. Musicals, rock, or jazz concerts will not qualify. Concert reports are due by the last day of class. Page 1 You are required to write a research paper on the life and contributions of one composer. The paper should have a minimum of seven pages of text material. Pictures, charts, and title page do not count as text. A bibliography should be included with at least three cited sources. Please do not use internet sources. The paper is due one week before the last day of class. Exams & Quizzes There will be four tests near the end of each unit of study. Tests 1— 3 will be given in the testing center. Test 4 will be taken during the scheduled time for the semester final. There will also be a midterm and final listening exam, where you will need to identify certain pieces from the four CD’s which accompany your textbook. I will provide a list of the pieces that will be covered on these exams. Any tests taken outside the scheduled times will have an automatic 10% deduction. Text | Instructional Material Kamien, Roger.
