Call to Order 2. Orientation for the 2009-2010 Academic Year – Chuck Allison a. Introductions. All Faculty Senate members introduce themselves. b. Our Charge. Chuck Allison gives an update as to the mission and purpose of the Faculty Senate. c. Our Organization. Chuck Allison describes the various aspects of the Faculty Senate. Chuck shows a PowerPoint slide listing each Faculty Senate committee and the respective committee chair. Currently, the Academic Standards committee, the Faculty Development committee, and the Personnel/Elections committee need new committee chairs. d. How Things Work. Chuck Allison gives a PowerPoint presentation outlining how things work in the Faculty Senate. e. What’s in Store for 2009-2010. Chuck Allison shows a PowerPoint slide outlining the policies that are currently on the academic schedule. Chuck Allison will send the PowerPoint presentation to all Senators. 3. Announcements a. Faculty Hiring QI i. Three faculty members are needed for input in the quality initiative process regarding the process of faculty hiring. Recommendations or volunteers go to Chuck Allison. This process requires a one-day commitment from faculty members who volunteer. b. Accreditation Task Force i. Self-Study due Summer 2010. Three to five faculty members are needed to help the accreditation task force. Names are due this Friday. c. Academic Institutional Effectiveness Committee i. Assessing our assessment instruments. One faculty member per school is needed to help with this assessment. d. Ethics Center: Cary Nelson, National AAUP President i. Open Discussion: “Governance Issues for Contingent and Non-Contingent Faculty”, September 24, LI 120, 4:00 – 5:15pm. e. Emergency Text Messaging System i. Click Opt-In on uvu.edu Home Page. Chuck Allison describes the process for becoming a part of the emergency text messaging system. 4. Administrative Reports a. President – President Holland talks about an upcoming leadership retreat, the Board of Regent’s meeting, current budget issues (potential 1-5% budget cut coming), and the Science building. b. VPAA – Liz Hitch talks about potential budget cuts, the Faculty Center events, c. PACE – not here. d. UVUSA – not here. e. Brent Turner talks about EthicsPoint, an anonymous reporting system for employees. Handout: “Ethics Point Training.” Discussion. Phil Matheson and Julian Smit will serve on an ad hoc committee and will work with Brent Turner to give more faculty input on this issue. 5. Committee Report a. Ad Hoc Committee on Extended Education Compensation – Julian Smit gives an update on the status of extended education compensation. 6. Information Items a. UVU Policy 402: Keys and Proximity Cards – Jim Michaelis, steward. Jim Michaelis talks about UVU Policy 402 and the changes that were made in the updating of this existing policy. b. UVU Policy 132: Institutional Data Collection and Research – Robert Loveridge, Tim Stanley, stewards. Robert Loveridge and Tim Stanley talk about UVU Policy 132 and the changes that were made in updating this existing policy. c. UVU Policy 635: Faculty Rights and Professional Responsibilities – Chuck Allison, steward. Chuck Allison talks about UVU Policy 635 and gives a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the changes and also highlighting the many policies that refer back to this policy. Discussion. d. UVU Policy 646: Faculty Appeals for Retention, Promotion, and Tenure – Chuck Allison, steward. Chuck Allison describes a minor change to this policy that was made over the summer regarding the midterm review. Chuck Allison will inform all senators when this policy moves into stage three. 7.
