Proposal to Delete a Course
(Consent Item)

1.
Identification of course:
1.1
Current course prefix (subject area) and number: HIM 222
1.2
Course title: Clinical Quality Assessment & Performance Improvement
1.3
Credit hours: 3 (lab component included)
2.
Rationale for the course deletion: Revisions to the accrediting body’s curriculum map have
decreased the taxonomy levels for the curricular components. Appropriate course content will
be incorporated into HIM 221-Health Information & Quality Management; the credit hours for
HIM 221 will be increased from 3 to 4 to accommodate the additional content.
3.
Effect of course deletion on programs or other departments, if known: None
4.
Proposed term for implementation: Fall 2011

1.
Identification of course:
1.1
Course prefix (subject area) and number: HIM 225
1.2
Course title: Legal Issues in Health Information Management
1.3

2.
Current prerequisites: HIM 100 C or consent of instructor
3.
Proposed prerequisites: None.
4.
Rationale for the revision of prerequisites: Recommendation of program curriculum
committee that completion of HIM 100 is not required for enrollment in course. Deletion of
prerequisites will allow students in other health related majors to enroll in the course without
consent of instructor; material is applicable to health majors other than HIM.
5.

Proposal to Revise Course Catalog Listing
(Consent Item)
Contact Person: Karen C. Sansom, karen.sansom@wku.edu, 270-780-2567
1.
Identification of course:
1.1
Course prefix (subject area) and number: HIM 295
1.2
Course title: Seminar and Professional Practice Experience
1.3
Credit hours: 5
2.
Current course catalog listing: Final course in a series of courses related to health records,
latest trends in health care delivery and their effect on health information management and
supervision and a final opportunity to practice all the cognitive psychomotor and affective
theory, skill and behavior in an extended field experience. Students will be required to spend 40
hours a week for 5 consecutive weeks in a healthcare facility under the direction of an RHIT or
RHIA. Students will return to the campus for a seminar at the completion of their professional
practice experience. Students are responsible for their own expenses during the professional
practice experience.
3.
Proposed course catalog listing: Final project-based field experience. Two weeks preparatory
classroom work; two weeks focused field experience; on-campus post-seminar and project
presentation. Students responsible for own expenses.
4.
Rationale for revision of the course catalog listing: While the accrediting agency (Commission
on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education or CAHIIM) is
silent on the minimum hours in the field, the intent is for the student to experience a
meaningful PPE; this can best be facilitated by making the PPE project-based. It is the
recommendation of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) that
the PPE be a combination of project focused classroom preparation and field experience.
5.
Proposed term for implementation: Spring 2012

systems. Guidelines used to assign codes to diseases and operations in the current ICD
classification system.
5.3
Rationale for revision of course catalog listing: The 9th revision of the International
Classification of Diseases-Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) is currently taught in the
course. By federal mandate, the 10th revision of the ICD-CM and a new system, ICD-PCS
(procedure coding system), will be implemented on October 1, 2013. During the
transition period, both revisions will be taught in the course, with a decreasing emphasis
on the 9th revision until the implementation date. Effective with the Fall 2013 semester,
ICD-10-CM and ICD-PCS will be taught exclusively in the course. The revised course
catalog description will allow for inclusion of both the 9th and 10th revisions during the

4.
Rationale for the proposed program change:

Delete HIM 222-Revised curriculum map from accrediting agency places less
emphasis on course content. Appropriate course content will be incorporated
into revised HIM 221C; the additional credit hour will be sufficient to include the
necessary HIM 222 course content. Recommendation per HIM program
curriculum committee and advisory board.

Add restricted elective. Students may choose a course in either human
pathophysiology or in the field of computer/information systems.
o The federally mandated implementation of a new diagnostic/procedural
coding system in 2013 emphasizes knowledge of human anatomy &
physiology and human pathophysiology. While the content is taught at
the appropriate taxonomic level in the current required course HIM 291Advanced Medical Terminology, students desiring an in-depth knowledge
of the subject may chose this option. Recommendation per the HIM
program curriculum committee.
o The federally mandated use of the electronic patient record by 2015 will
require that graduates be knowledgeable in the computerization of
health information management.
Students desiring an in-depth
knowledge of principles of information systems, information security or
database management may choose the corresponding course as an
option. Recommendation per HIM program curriculum committee and
program advisory board.

Revise course titles
o HIM 221-To reflect incorporation of material from deleted course HIM
222-Clinical Quality Assessment & Performance Improvement
o HIM 230-The proposed title will better reflect the course content.
o HIM 250-While an introduction to several classification systems is
included in the course, the majority of the course content focuses on the
International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The proposed course title
will better reflect the course content.
o HIM 251-The proposed title will better reflect the course content.
5.
Proposed term for implementation and special provisions (if applicable): All revisions
will be effective Fall 2011.
