Proposal to Revise Course Prerequisites
(Consent Item)
Contact Person: Richard Aldridge, richard.aldridge@wku.edu, 53099
1.
Identification of course:
1.1
1.2
1.3
2.
Course prefix (subject area) and number: ACCT 300
Course title: Intermediate Financial Accounting I
Credit hours: 4
Current prerequisites:
ACCT 201 with a grade of “C” or better
3.
Proposed prerequisites:
Cumulative 2.5 GPA in ACCT 200 and ACCT 201 combined, and with a minimum grade of “C” or higher
in each course
4.
Rationale for the revision of prerequisites:
Effective in the Fall 2007, students must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA in ACCT 200 and ACCT 201, and
with a minimum grade of “C” or higher in each course to be admitted to the Accounting Program.
Therefore, students should not be allowed to advance into upper-level accounting course until they earn the
minimum grades necessary for program admission.
5.
Effect on completion of major/minor sequence:
This proposal may slow some students down by preventing them from enrolling in the first upper level
accounting courses. However, a solid understanding of the principles covered in ACCT 200 and ACCT
201 is essential for success in upper level accounting courses.
6.
Effective Catalog Year: For students enrolling in the class in the Summer 2008.
7.
Dates of prior committee approvals:

Proposal to Revise Course Prerequisites
(Consent Item)
Contact Person: Richard Aldridge richard.aldridge@wkku.edu
1.
745-3099
Identification of course:
1.1
1.2
1.3
Course prefix (subject area) and number: ACCT 440
Course title: Business Law for the Accounting Professional
Credit hours: 3
2.
Current prerequisites:
MGT 200 and Senior Standing
3.
Proposed prerequisites: MGT 200 and ACCT 402 (or concurrently) or ACCT 450 (or concurrently)
4.
Rationale for the revision of prerequisites:
This course covers the legal concepts regularly tested on the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
Examination. Therefore, the course should be taken near the end of the student’s coursework and closer to
the exam. Since many states now require candidates to have 150 credit hours to sit for the CPA Exam,
students obtain senior standing well before being able to take the exam. Changing the prerequisite would
ensure that students take the course closer to graduation and when they will actually sit for the exam.
5.
Effect on completion of major/minor sequence:
Since students will simply adjust their schedules by taking ACCT 440 later and other courses earlier in
their program, this proposal will not affect the completion of the accounting major.
6.
Effective Catalog Year: Fall 2008

A grade of “C” or better in CS 241 and a prerequisite or corequisite of ENG 307 and a prerequisite or
corequisite of COMM 161 or COMM 145

One requirement of CS 444 is experience in programming. Using CS 241 instead of CS 225 as a
prerequisite will make sure that the students are more mature in programming. Technical document writing
and oral presentations are required in this course; adding the above new requirements will ensure that each
