Course Description:
This course will explore the foundations of Algebra. Successful completion of this course prepares
students for Geometry. We will be using the textbook Algebra 1 (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt).
Required Materials:





Spiral or composition notebook with graph paper pages, available from your teacher for $1.75.
Pencils (unless you have mechanical pencils, please also bring a manual pencil sharpener)
Pen
Graph paper
Scientific or graphing calculator
Academic Outline:
Homework/Class Work/Notebook (10% of overall grade)
 Students are expected to stay engaged by taking notes in class.
 Students will engage in practice problems during class, which may be collected and graded.
 Homework will be given each night and checked the following class. Each homework
assignment is worth 2 points. Late assignments will be given 1 point.
Daily Quizzes (10% of overall grade)
 Short, daily/weekly quizzes (yes, every day!) will be given to see to what degree students
mastered the previous day’s material. Each quiz is worth 10 points.
 Daily quizzes may be made up by appointment.
Grade Scale:
(A) 90 – 100
Unit Tests (80% of overall grade)
(B) 80 – 89
 Tests, worth 100 points each, will be given at the end of each unit.
(C) 70 – 79
Students are expected to study for tests and come to class prepared.
(F) 0 – 69
Absent students may take a make-up test by appointment only.

Students will have the opportunity to re-take a test if they are unhappy
with the grade. This may be done by appointment only.
Note: No Ds are
given in Algebra 1!
Important Note: Students will only pass Algebra 1 if they receive 70% or higher for each semester!
Behavioral expectations and policies:
 I expect students to be respectful at all times to their classmates and to their teacher.
 Students are to be in their seats, with necessary materials for class, when the bell rings.
 Phones and texting: If a student is caught texting in class, the phone will be confiscated
without prior warning and sent to student management, where a parent will pick it up. Students
may not listen to music in class.
