Bowling Green State University 2016-2017 Cheerleading Tryouts

Information

Date: April 15 th and 16 th

Location: TBA

Eligibility: All returning BGSU students (Main campus or Firelands) with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, transfer students, and incoming freshman are eligible to tryout. You must have been accepted to BGSU prior to tryouts.

You must bring five (5) required documents to registration on Friday of try-out. You will not be permitted to tryout if you are missing any of the documentation. You will not be allowed to participate if you do not have all the required documents

1. Head Shot for New Members

2. Team Walk-on tryout Liability Release Form

3. Concussion Acknowledgement Form

4. Physical from a physician dated after 4/1/16

5. Front and Back copy of your insurance card

Tryout Attire:

Females: Sports Bra (Orange, Brown, White or Black), Black Spandex/Biker Shorts, Bow (Tail ends should face down the back of head), White Cheer Shoes, Hair half-up/Half-down curled. Natural make-up, red lipstick. No previous BG cheerleading apparel or clothing from other universities may be worn during tryouts.

Males: Athletic T-shirt (Orange, Brown, White or Black), Black shorts, athletic shoes, Clean shaven. No previous BG cheerleading apparel or clothing from other universities may be worn during tryouts.

Interview: Business Attire

If you are unable to attend tryouts in person (highly recommended) due to cheerleading worlds showcase, another competition, or a distance farther than 6 hours, you must contact Daniel Nester at dnester@bgsu.edu to submit a video tryout and receive the video tryout requirements. Video tryouts must be received by April 5 th , 2016 at 11:59pm

(Eastern Time).

4:30-5:00pm Registration, turn in required documents

5:00-5:30pm Open Stretch and Minimum Tumbling Requirement Warm-up

5:30pm Minimum Tumbling Requirement Evaluation

*First round of cuts if necessary*

5:45pm Additional Tumbling Warm-up and Evaluation

6:45pm Learn Game Day Material

7:45pm Open Stunting/Practice

*Dismissed no later than 9:00pm*

Saturday, April 16th

8:45am Interviews followed by a timed mile

12:00-1:00 Lunch

1:00pm Begin Day 2 judging (Closed Door)

*Once tryouts have been completed, a list of those making the 2016-2017 will be posted. Those individuals will meet with the coaching staff for information and uniform sizing. Dismissed no later than 7PM*

Detailed Breakdown of Tryouts

Minimum Tumbling Requirements (Females)

Standing back tuck

Standing back handspring, back tuck

Power hurdle round-off, back handspring, back tuck

*There is not a minimum tumbling requirement for Males, however you must be willing to work towards gaining these requirements*

These three skills will be performed back to back on either the basketball floor, turf, or cheerleading mats. The coaching staff will announce at the beginning of warm-ups what surface you will perform these skills on. Feet must land together on all skills.

Additional Tumbling Evaluation

– After the minimum tumbling, you will get to warm-up additional tumbling. You may perform one pass from each other the following sections. Everything is based on a point system.

The harder your tumbling, the better potential for a higher score. However, technique and cleanness is taken into a consideration. You may also add a specialty skill in the middle of your running tumbling (front handspring, whip, arabian, etc.) or one jump to either/both of the standing tumbling skills to try and increase your score.

Additional Running Tumbling (One pass down the diagonal)

RO BHS tuck- max of 2 points

RO BHS layout – max of 5 points

RO BHS full – max of 10 Points

Standing Series Tumbling (One pass)

Bhs series to tuck – max of 2 points

Bhs series to layout – max of 5 points

Bhs series to full – max of 10 points

Standing Skill (One Pass)

Back tuck – max of 2 points

*Cartwheel full- max of 7 points

*Standing full- max of 10 points

Game Day Material Evaluation

Game day material will be taught on Friday evening.

You will perform all the gameday material in groups on Saturday. This will include one or two cheers and two band dances.

Stunting Evaluation

– The evaluation for stunting will take place on Saturday. You will perform a technique stunt and one additional stunt. Stunts evaluation starts with the flyers feet on the ground and is concluded when the flyers feet touch the ground after the dismount. The technique stunt will be performed to counts, which will be taught on Friday. You may add dismounts to the additional stunt to increase your score.

Technique Stunt

– Max of 10 points

All-Girl: J-toss to platform, pull lib, straight pop

Coed: Toss hands press extension, straight pop

Additional Coed Stunt

Toss chair or walk-in hands, toss hands – max of 2 points

Toss hands to extension, walk-in hands to extension, bump-and-go extension – max of 4 points

Toss/walk-in extension - max of 6 points

Hands to one leg stunt, bump-n-go one leg stunt, walk-in immediate one leg stunt – max of 8 points

Toss platform pull one leg, toss pull-through – max of 10 points

Elite stunts (full up, rewind, back handspring up, round-off up, etc.) – max of 20 points

Additional All Girl Stunt - All stunts will be performed from a J-Toss entry except stunts labeled with an (*)

Toss to extension/platform- max of 2 points

Hands to one leg stunt, bump-and-go one leg stunt, toss platform pull one leg – max of 4 points

Toss pull-through – max of 6 points

*Switch-up to one leg stunt - max of 8 points

*Full up platform – max of 10 points

* Elite Stunts (full up pull through,1 1/2+ up to platform, rewind, round-off up, etc.) - max of 20 points

Timed mile

On Saturday, you will run a timed mile. Immediately following your mile, you will perform three standing tucks to counts. You should wear actual shoes that give support (not typical cheerleading shoes) and be sure you can perform a tuck in them as you will not be given time to change shoes.

Interview- max of 15 points
