____May A. Blanchard Scholarship: This annual scholarship is offered by BGSU due to the contributions of the
Toledo Chapter of Sigma Alpha Omega, for a Toledo area full-time junior or senior majoring in Dietetics or
Nutrition Sciences. A 3.0 or higher grade point average is required. The amount of the award varies.
This scholarship was established in 1953 by the Home Economics Honor Society, Sigma Alpha Omega, at the University of Toledo. It was created to honor May A. Blanchard who served as the head of the Home
Economics Department for 25 years. When the department was closed in 1962, arrangements were made to make the scholarship money available to a Toledo area student who is pursuing a program of study in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences then in 2015 to the Food and Nutrition program in the
Department of Public and Allied Health at Bowling Green State University.
____Laura E. Heston Scholarship: The Laura E. Heston Scholarship is an annual award offered to a full-time continuing undergraduate student who has achieved a 3.0 or higher grade point average and who is pursuing a program of study in food and nutrition. Preference will be given to students with financial need. The amount of the award varies.
Laura E. Heston served as the chair of the Department of Home Economics from 1918-1954 and played a
significant role in establishing the dietetics program at Bowling Green State University.
