H.1A.1: Compare, order and locate real numbers on a number line.
Learning Target:
 To place and locate numbers on a number line
 Compare numbers
Warm-up: Give out five natural numbers, have students line up. Then add whole number,
zero. Then give out five negative numbers. Then add in some rational numbers (e.g.
Fractions, terminating, and repeating decimals). Last add irrational numbers like square
roots and pi.
Teach:
 Review place value (hundred thousands, ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens,
ones, tenths, hundredths, thousandths) (H.1A.1 Place Value Chart
Worksheet)
 Address the different types of numbers: natural (counting) numbers, real numbers,
rational numbers, irrational numbers, integers, percentage. (H.1A.1
Number Classification Table Worksheet)
 Discuss number lines for examples: thermometer, elevator, football field, etc.
 Practice ordering real numbers and then place numbers on a number line.
Active Engagement:
 Student should be taking notes for examples: drawing pictures, Frayer model, two
line notes, etc.
Guided Practice (Work time):
 H.1A.1 Guided Practice: Ordering rational/irrational numbers worksheet
Closure: Have a number line written on the white board (or floor). Give students a card
with real numbers on it and have students order themselves along the number line. For
