Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) Awards *formerly the Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Awards Award Name: Faculty Excellence Award Purpose: Awarded to a BGSU faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in creating high-impact community-based learning experiences, such as community-based learning courses (a.k.a. servicelearning) and/or community-based research. Definitions: Community-based learning (also known as service-learning) – A credit-bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs, and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of curricular content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of personal values and civic responsibility. Community-based research – A collaborative approach to research that equitably involves all partners in the research process and recognizes unique strengths that each brings. Community-based research begins with a research topic of importance to the community and has the aim of combining knowledge with action, and achieving social change. Eligibility: All full-time, permanent BGSU faculty members in any career track are eligible to apply who taught a community-based course or conducted community-based research in Spring 2015, Summer 2015, Fall 2015, or Spring 2016. Selection Criteria: Faculty members nominated for this award should have demonstrated excellence in one or both of the following areas: Community-based learning teaching methods; Conducting community-based research; Nomination Process: Nominations by deans and department heads, faculty colleagues, or self-nominations will be accepted. It is encouraged to work directly with the faculty nominee to compile the following materials prior to completing the online nominations form: o o o o o o o Nominee’s contact information (Name, email, phone); Short biography (150 words maximum, written in the third person) Headshot photograph of nominee (JPG format) Two letters of support (no more than 2 pages each), from any combination of department head/dean, current/former student, or community partner, addressing relevant activities, outcomes, and impacts of the nominee’s academic community-based learning teaching methods and/or community-based research activities. Current Curriculum Vitae Personal statement (see instructions below) Summary outlining community-based teaching and/or community-based research (see instructions below) 1|Page If nominating for the community-based teaching focus, the following additional materials will be required: o o Upload a two-page personal statement from the nominee summarizing and contextualizing the nominee’s record of excellence in developing, implementing and sustaining academic communitybased teaching at course or department level with relevant outcomes/impacts on students, community, department, and discipline; Upload a table (see template on page 3) with a descriptive listing of the specific community-based teaching to be recognized. If nominating for the community-based research focus, the following additional materials will be required: o Upload a two-page personal statement from the nominee explaining how this community-based research relates to the nominee’s overall research agenda, and the impact of this work on their discipline, students, and community; o Upload a table (see template on page 3) with a descriptive listing of the community-based research to be recognized that was in progress during the award year. If nominating for both community-based teaching and community-based research please include the materials for both categories as outlined above. Timeline: All forms submitted to the committee by March 16, 2016, 5 pm EST. Awards ceremony and announcements to be held on April 21, 2016. Review & Selection Process: Reviewed by a committee of faculty, staff, students, and community partners. Notification & Recognition: All nominees and nominators will be invited to the awards ceremony Recipients will be announced at the awards ceremony.
