1. Author’s or authors’ name(s) Example: Smith, Jennifer K. and Paul James. (Invert first author’s name only.)
2. Title of a part of the book (chapter, essay, subject, poem, short story title) in quotation
marks and punctuation inside quotation marks
Examples: “African Masks.” “The Raven.” “Civil Disobedience.”
3. Title of the book in italics Example: World Cultures.
4. Name of editor, translator, or compiler Example: Ed. Ernest L. Freud or
Trans. James Stern or Comp. Allan Brown
5. Edition used Example: 3rd ed.
6. Number(s) or the volume(s) used Example: 77 (just the number)
7. Name of a series Example: Great Book Series
8. Place of publication (first city listed and ONLY the city; NO state or country): publisher,
year of publication Example: Chicago: DK Publishing, 2003.
9. Page numbers used Example 2003. 54-60. Please note: there is a PERIOD after the publication year and
before the pages used.
