Name of Program:
St. Mary’s County 4-H Program
Job Title:
4-H Club Activity Leader
Purpose:
To provide leadership for young people in a 4-H club in a particular
program, activity, and/or event. The Activity Leader may also
organize a community or county-wide activity in which youth from a
designated interest area may participate. The activity may be
independent of or in support of a particular local 4-H club.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Plan, organize, coordinate, promote, implement and evaluate all activities that you
have or share leadership for. This includes communicating with the 4-H Club
Organizational Leader, 4-H Extension Staff, 4-H Youth, parents, and where
necessary, community leaders.
2. Assist in recruiting, screening, appointing, training and evaluating volunteers for
the activity and learning experience as necessary.
3. Provide appropriate supervision to assist and encourage youth and adults as
necessary.
4. Encourage youth to participate in other learning experiences supporting their
projects and interests.
5. Recognize achievements of 4-H members and publicize results of activities with
approval of Organizational Leader(s).
6. Support Affirmative Action efforts of the 4-H program; includes the submission
of reports as directed by 4-H Program Staff from the University of Maryland
Extension St. Mary’s County Office.
7. Support Affirmative Action efforts of the 4-H program, which includes providing
4-H activities to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, gender, religion,
age, national origin or handicap.
8. Maintain records on the learning experiences and submit them to the
Organizational Leader who will submit reports to the County 4-H office.
9. May provide transportation as needed to club members and volunteers to local,
district, regional or state learning experiences.
10. Support 4-H fundraising efforts for local, county or state 4-H programs.
11. Participate in other learning experiences that support the mission of the University
of Maryland Extension 4-H Youth Development Program.
Job Site: St. Mary’s County- Community Based. Optional opportunities to travel to other
parts of Maryland, D.C., and other states.
Qualifications: The 4-H Club Activity Leader must have an interest in working with and
motivating youth and adults.
Specific Skills Required: Communication skills, creative thinking, and a general knowledge
of and/or interest in conducting activities/learning experiences.
Physical Demands: Light lifting, occasional long periods of standing
Environment: Must provide a smoke/drug-free and non-alcoholic environment at 4-H
sponsored events.
Estimated Time Requirements: The expectation is that club leaders will provide a
minimum of 10-12 hours per year or distributed over a 4-8 week period as required (time is
dependent on particular learning activity). Other time commitments are flexible and depend
on the number of times the 4-H club meets, the number of learning experiences a club is
involved in, and involvement in other 4-H events.
Tenure: One year, renewable option.
Training: Will attend annual, or otherwise as scheduled, leadership training provided by the
County Extension Office.
Benefits: Scholarships are available for State and Regional Training/Program opportunities.
