Delivering 3D graphics over the cloud

Outscale uses Cisco Unified Computing System

(Cisco UCS

®

) architecture to provide enterprisegrade cloud services, including graphics processing unit (GPU) cloud-computing with NVIDIA technology.

We want to provide customers with the best infrastructure, which is why we partner with the best.

- Laurent Seror, CEO and Founder, Outscale

As cloud services continue to grow in popularity, IT companies are looking for providers who can deliver agile and reliable high-performance service at a reasonable cost.

Challenges

• Achieve price point that is competitive with rivals

• Drive innovation in cloud-hosting services

• Scale quickly to meet increasing demand for cloud services

Founded in 2010, Outscale delivers high-performance cloud computing services for companies ranging from small startups to multinational corporations. With six data centers in the United States, France, and Hong Kong, Outscale runs more than 50,000 virtual machines for customers worldwide.

“We use enterprise-grade equipment because our customers deserve the best performance and stability, but the equipment can be very expensive,” says

Laurent Seror, chief executive officer (CEO) and founder of Outscale. “To be competitive, we need to optimize operating costs without compromising security.”

Dedicated to business agility and innovation, Outscale also needs an infrastructure that can be used for state-of-the-art services, such as GPU in the cloud, which allows companies to deliver 3D experiences to their customers over the cloud. To compete with rivals, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS),

Outscale needed to deliver its services reliably and cost-effectively.

Cisco UCS architecture supports GPU cloud computing for greater access to powerful 3D graphics.

Solutions

• Built a-la-carte cloud services around reliable, enterprise-grade Cisco UCS architecture

• Installed NVIDIA GRID K2 to provide cloudbased remote visualization services

Software-Defined Anything: 3D experiences in the cloud

Outscale’s original cloud OS, TINA OS, drives Cisco UCS architecture to deliver more than 10,000 requests per second. The Cisco UCS C240 supports two

NVIDIA GRID K2 cards per server to provide virtual machines with GPU for clients to deliver services with advanced graphic acceleration, such as desktops as a service (DaaS) or software as a service (SaaS). Outscale is the only provider delivering GPU NVIDIA K2 in the cloud.

As an example, Dassault Systèmes, creator of advanced 3D modeling and simulation applications, released a cloud-based version of its CATIA application hosted by Outscale. With the powerful

Cisco architecture, Dassault customers can create and view 3D designs from almost any device.

Using service profiles for data center management

With hundreds of servers worldwide, Cisco UCS Manager is key to helping

Outscale boost productivity and cut costs. Service profiles make it easy to keep track of configurations to support unique customer needs. Using the robust Cisco API, Outscale can control all Cisco infrastructure from a single interface to quickly deliver updates or new functionality without needing an engineer on site. Only three administrators are needed to run data centers on three continents.

Lowering TCO

Streamlined management helps minimize manpower and human errors for lower management costs. Cisco UCS infrastructure reduces power consumption and cabling to reduce operating costs. “Cisco UCS is vital to our service. We could never meet our target price point without it,” says Seror.

Results

• Supported four GPUs per server reducing TCO

• Needed only three engineers to administer entire data center

• Increased competitive strength against AWS with at least 10 percent price point reduction

Delivering graphics through the cloud

“About 15 percent of our revenue is 3D rendering and virtual desktop infrastructure, but it’s growing thanks to GPU cloud computing. It may grow to

50 percent in the next few years,” says David Chassan, marketing and strategy director at Outscale. “Cisco UCS and NVIDIA help us achieve high performance and even stronger customer satisfaction, with plenty of room to scale while maintaining the integrity of our customers’ trusted business applications.”
