4-H TRIBUNE
March 2013
Volume 6 Issue 2
NEW THIS YEAR
The market animal registration forms will be done in a 2 part copy. They will be
mailed out to club leaders as soon as we get them from the printer. This will
allow you to take a copy with you on the night of weigh in. If you have any
questions, call 410-386-2760.
Market Swine, Lamb and Goat Weigh-In and Tagging
Therapeutic Riding Barn
Market Swine: Friday, May 3rd, 5-9pm
Market Sheep and Market Goat: Friday, May 10th, 5-9pm
If you plan to exhibit one of the above at the county or state fair, it must have a CC ear
tag and be weighed in here at Carroll County. The Animal Science Code of Ethics
will be on the reverse side, please sign and date. Tags cost $1 each and checks
can be made payable to CCEAC. You must turn in a completed form with the number
of tags you will need by April 29th for Swine and May 3rd for Lambs and Goats.
Anyone who does not turn in the registration form by the above deadlines may not be
eligible for the fairs. In addition, several of you show 4-H in one county and FFA in
another: you must register, tag, and weigh-in the appropriate animal for that
county!! You may not weigh in your animals at another county and be eligible for the
Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair. Questions?? Call 410-386-2760
Castration Policy of the Maryland 4-H AnSc Program: All male steers, lambs, pigs, and goats must be
neutered and healed prior to 4-H weigh-in and tagging. The only exception would be animals that have
obvious signs they have been banded, however, their scrotal sac is still intact.
Fashion FunFest!!!
Don’t miss out on this exciting day!! There will be a sewing project,
crafts, head shots and a mini fashion show to close out the day! And
don’t miss out on the chance to learn about fashion design! This was
a big hit last year, so don’t miss out on your chance to come this year! Fashion FunFest
will be held on Saturday, April 20th from 9am – 2pm. Registration information is
included in this Tribune. Questions? Contact Becky Ridgeway at 410-386-2760 or
bridgewa@umd.edu

NEW VIDEO CONTEST FOR LIVESTOCK
EXHIBITORS
All of the livestock departments will be
holding a video contest. The contest is
intended to help enhance the learning and
knowledge one gains throughout their
project and to then convey that gained
knowledge in a visual communication tool
for the public. For questions please contact
the appropriate department
superintendent.
Indoor Building
This month I begin my series of articles
highlighting new classes or class changes
for Indoor Depts. at the 2013 County Fair.
Now is the time to use indoor time to work
on craft projects or other department’s
projects that can be made and set aside for
the fair. Some of you attended Mid-Winter
Blahs and made items which can be
entered in the fair. Put those away in a
safe place and don’t forget to enter them
for the County Fair. Public schools will be
closed for spring break. Why not use some
of that time to work on projects to enter in
the fair? By not waiting until school is out to
start your projects you have more time,
won’t be rushed, probably have a neater
project and be able to complete more
projects to give us more entries for our
public to view.
We will start with the Crafts Dept. We
have a new Bone class, which is any item
made from bone/skeleton of animals. Once
again this year we will have the Duct Tape
class. There will also be 3 Jewelry
classes. They are: 1. Jewelry made from
fiber (ex. Friendship bracelet) 2. Jewelrytraditional, (beads, wire, charms, etc.)
single piece and 3. Jewelry set-traditional.
The Painting class will be painting on
wood, metal or glass. Glass craft will be
any item crafted on or with glass.
The Clover Dept. will have 6 classes
just like last year. Each clover can enter 1
item in each class. The General Dept.
classes will remain the same as last year.
A department that has declined in
entries is the Mechanical Arts. We usually
think of restored farm machinery or
antiques for this dept. There are also
classes for restored residential equipment,
modified equipment or fabricated. Do you
have project work from Career Tech that
could be entered in this dept.? If you have
any questions about entries for this dept.
now is the time to contact the Supt., Gary
Seibel, at 410 635-6930 or
gseibel@umd.edu.
Once again I would encourage 4-H’ers
to enter their school writing projects in the
Writing Dept. 4-H’ers can see how their
writing compares to others, receive
premium money and give the public the
opportunity to read their entries.
Next month I will be covering Garden
products, Informal Demonstrations, Home
Environment and Lost Arts Dept.
Any questions please contact me at
410 857-0416.

Carroll County 4-H Dog Training Registration
Registration for Carroll County 4-H Dog Training Classes will be on Tuesday, April 9th from
6:30pm-8pm at the Carroll County Extension Office. Youth hoping to participate will need to
call Robin Korotki at 410-239-6251 (leave message, please).
Youth and parents need to come at 6:30pm to register and attend an initial program
session. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG. YOU MUST BRING A COPY OF YOUR DOG’S
RABIES CERTIFICATE AND COUNTY DOG LICENSE/TAG to be left on file with the
trainers. No dog without a valid rabies certificate or county dog license will be allowed to
attend training classes. If the rabies expires during training, you must bring the new certificate
with you at the next possible training date. If you think you might be substituting a dog within
the training classes, bring those certificates and license/tags with you also. Please take the
time to register as many dogs as you think you may need through the training sessions.
Additionally, on Tuesday, April 23rd, there will be an initial DOG EVALUATION
SESSION. The dog (or dogs) the youth is registering to train with will need to come and be
evaluated as to their suitability. If a dog is deemed to be not suitable for this kind of training, it
will be dismissed. A youth may substitute another dog for training, but it must be there on the
23rd for the evaluation. The minimum age for dogs participating in this program is at least 4
months of age by April 23rd date. In addition, there will be no classes for Clover age youth.
Location for Evaluation Session will be determined, look in future Tribunes for more
information. Both meetings are mandatory!!!
Fees for this year are:
$5.00 for current CC Dog Club members
$20.00 for all other CC 4-H members
Carroll County 4-H Dog Training Classes are open to Carroll County 4-H members ages 8-18.

Guidelines for Carroll County 4-H Dog Care and Training Project
CLASSES: will be held on Tuesday Evenings from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Parents or guardians are expected to be at the
Shipley Arena to pick up 4-H participants when classes are over. The first class will be on 5/7/2013 and continue until
7/16/2013. All classes will be held in the Shipley Arena.
CHECK IN: clip boards with check in sheets are provided for each training group and the 4-H participants in this project
are expected to check in on the sheet for their class before class.
ATTENDANCE: Participants training a dog are expected to attend at least 60% of the scheduled classes, to participate at
the 2013 Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair. It is to your benefit to plan on attending a larger percentage of classes if at all
possible. In the event you are not able to attend a training session, please check with your training instructor to get
information on any new material you would miss when you are unable to attend class.
CLOTHING: It is often cool during training classes, so wear or bring a jacket or sweater when needed. Plan on wearing
soft-soled shoes (SANDALS AND FLIP-FLOPS ARE NOT ALLOWED). If you have long hair, tie it back so your vision is not
impaired while training your dog.
DOGS IN SEASON: If your dog comes in season DO NOT BRING HER TO CLASS! The 4-H member is expected to attend
classes and work with their dog at home so training progress can continue while the dog is in season.
