Accommodation still available for this academic year
Any undergraduate or postgraduate offer-holder who has firmly
accepted their place can still apply for university accommodation
via the online portal. Applicants are strongly encouraged
to apply by 31st July and the Accommodation Office will
prioritise applications received by this date when allocating
accommodation. For further information and to apply please visit
the accommodation website here.
Please also note the University’s new policy that students are able to stay in
university accommodation, either on campus or nearby, after their 1st year of
study. Therefore, you may want to check with your existing students if they wish
to consider this opportunity for 2012/13.
Pre-departure events 2012
An online version of our pre-departure presentation is now available
for students who cannot attend one of our in country briefings. Split
into two easy to follow sections; Part A provides general information
about the University, accepting your offer, and the accommodation and
visa application processes; Part B covers what to pack, travel to the
campuses, the airport Meet and Greet scheme and adjusting to British
Culture. As this form of information delivery is new for us, we would
appreciate your feedback.

New UKBA immigration
regulations effective 30th July 2012
The Home Office has made two
changes to the Immigration Rules.
The first change makes provision
for an Entry Clearance Officer to
be satisfied that an applicant is a
genuine student before granting
entry clearance under Tier 4 of
the Points-Based System. The
second change, to the “General
Grounds for Refusal”, makes
provision for an Entry Clearance
Officer to refuse to issue entry
clearance where the applicant
fails to attend an interview
without providing a reasonable
explanation.
The changes support the
introduction of a targeted
interview programme by the UK
Border Agency, to ensure students
seeking to abuse the immigration
system are identified and refused
a visa for the UK. The Agency
plans to interview between
10,000 and 14,000 student visa
applicants, amounting to up to
5% of applicants, over the coming
year. Students from low-risk
countries who already benefit
from a streamlined visa application
process will be exempt from the
genuineness test. For a list of low
risk countries, please click here
Visas and advance payments update
With the exceptions of the compulsory tuition fee deposit for
Master’s applicants and the accommodation key deposit, the
University strongly advises that new starters should now not make
any further advance payments to the University until after their
visa application has been approved. This is because students are
required to show sufficient funds in their bank account for 28 days
prior to their application and we may not be able to update the
UKBA’s records to reflect payments received before scheduled
visa appointments. Please note that the CAS statement will not be
amended to reflect receipt of the accommodation deposit.
Queries about CAS statements should be directed to
pbsadmissions@exeter.ac.uk quoting the student’s full name and
University reference number.

University of Exeter boosts research
in disease prevention and treatment
The University of Exeter is furthering our understanding of the causes and treatments
of diseases. Through its £230 million investment in science, medicine and engineering,
the University is using systems biology – an approach that uses techniques from
mathematics and physics – to better understand how disease occurs. Ultimately, the
research could lead to new treatments for some of the world’s most deadly diseases.
As part of this initiative, the University of Exeter and the Defence Science &
Technology Laboratory (Dstl) are jointly funding five PhDs, all focused on identifying
new ways of preventing and treating infectious diseases. Starting in October 2012, the
students will be based at the University of Exeter. For more information,

Research paves the way for accurate manufacturing
of complex parts for aerospace and car industries
Producing strong, lightweight and complex parts for car manufacturing and the aerospace industry
is set to become cheaper and more accurate thanks to a new technique developed by engineers
from the University of Exeter. The research team, in the Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing
has developed a new method for making three-dimensional aluminium composite parts by mixing
a combination of relatively inexpensive powders. For more information, please click here
Marine energy doubled
by predicting wave power
The energy generated from our oceans could be doubled using new methods for
predicting wave power. Research led by the University of Exeter, published in the journal
Renewable Energy, could pave the way for significant advancements in marine renewable
energy, making it a more viable source of power.
The study was carried out by a team of mathematicians and engineers from the
University of Exeter and Tel Aviv University. They have devised a means of accurately
predicting the power of the next wave in order to make the technology far more
efficient, extracting twice as much energy as is currently possible. For more information,
