The University of Exeter is a leading, internationally recognised higher
education institution whose core business is the generation and dissemination
of knowledge, which specifically includes Climate Change and Sustainable
Futures. The University acknowledges the importance of being responsible,
sustainable and ethical in order to meet the needs of the present and leave a
better environment for future generations. We believe this can be achieved
through the skills and knowledge that our graduates learn and put into practice,
our research and exchange of knowledge through business and community
engagement, and through our own strategies and operations.
Through this Policy, which applies to the Streatham and St Luke’s campuses, the
University of Exeter aims to:
• c omply with all applicable legal requirements and other requirements to which
the University subscribes;
• set and communicate clear quantifiable environmental objectives and targets;
• put in place appropriate controls to prevent pollution;
• p rovide all students with the opportunity to raise their awareness of sustainability
issues by supporting sustainability related curricular and extracurricular activities;
• r educe the University’s carbon dioxide emissions through the delivery of the
Carbon Management Plan;
• e ncourage the adoption of sustainable travel practices by staff, students and visitors
travelling to and from University campuses;
• r educe the environmental impact of the University through conservation of its
material resources;
• e nsure new building developments take into account sustainable construction
principles;
• take positive action to promote biodiversity on sites that the University manages
or owns;
• e ngage with the Higher Education Sector and the wider community to promote
environmental best practice and seek collaborative opportunities in order to
facilitate developments in this area;
• e nsure that the Environmental Sustainability Policy is communicated to all students
and individuals working for or on behalf of the University and to provide training
and awareness for staff and students where appropriate;
• p rovide information regarding the University’s environmental performance to
staff, students, visitors and all other interested parties;
• e nsure that the Environmental Sustainability Policy is reviewed annually,
documented, implemented and maintained to ensure continual improvement
in environmental performance;
• support the delivery of the University’s Corporate Responsibility policy;
• e ncourage sites, where the University of Exeter operates in partnership with
other organisations, to adopt a policy in accordance with the commitments laid
out within this Policy.
The Chief Operating Officer through the Dual Assurance process has ultimate responsibility
for the environmental performance of the University. All staff and students have a
responsibility in delivering this policy.
• put in place measures to promote reduction, re-use and recycling of waste;
• implement the University’s Sustainable Procurement Policy to encourage
improvements in the environmental performance of suppliers, goods and services;
