The communications workshop will be held at the Howard County Fairgrounds on Saturday, January 23rd.The categories for the Communications Contest are: Extemporaneous, Prepared, Radio Spot, and Interpretations. This is an excellent opportunity, whether a 4-H’er carries a public speaking project or not, to receive valuable tips, and advice to enhance public speaking abilities and presentation. Day 5 LIVESTOCK SKILLATHON 5 RATE-OF-GAIN 5 MODEL DOG SHOW 5 4-H Central Cluster First Annual Talent Show has been RE-SCHEDULED to Saturday, 1/30/16 from 7 – 9 pm at Bushy Park Elementary School in Glenwood. 4-Her's ages 8-18 from Frederick, Howard and Montgomery County Programs are invited to audition to participate in the Central Cluster Talent Show. The Community is invited to come and watch. Categories will consist of: Vocal Music * Instrumental Music * Dance * Miscellaneous (Poetry, comedy, magic, drama, etc.) *NEW Category*- Compete as a Club To register- https://extension.umd.edu/montgomery-county/4-hs-got-talent. Page 2 4-H Cloverleaf INCLEMENT WEATHER SCHOOLS CLOSED When schools are closed. ALL 4-H programs are canceled. This includes closing early due to inclement weather. SNOW EMERGENCY PLAN If a Snow Emergency Plan for Howard County is in effect at 7:00 a.m. on either Saturday or Sunday, ALL programs and activities, 4-H, school and community will be canceled. Should the Plan go into effect after 7:00 a.m., programs in progress may be completed at the discretion of the activity leader. FAIR SPECIAL AWARDS The Howard County 4-H Program is looking for sponsors of Special Awards for the 2016 Fair. Please refer to the end of the Cloverleaf to view our current list of available trophies. If you are interested in picking up any of these awards, please contact Rick Hodiak at 410-313-1914 or hodiak@umd.edu. CALLING ALL NEW VOLUNTEERS! UME Volunteer Training is available. This class will provide participants basic information on the University of Maryland Extension 4-H Youth Development program. It will cover UME policies and procedures and detail the process to becoming an appointed UME 4-H Volunteer. The course will be taught via Webinar. Participants will need access to a computer with internet connection as well as telephone. The sessions will not be recorded. However, before taking the class you must contact Chris Rein at the Howard County office at 410-313-1915 or email Crein@umd.edu for UME Volunteer paperwork, that must be completed before attending the training. Once all your paperwork is returned to the office, Chris will be able to register you for a class. 2016 4-H CALENDAR The 4-H Calendar for 2016 is available at the 4-H web site at www.howard4-h.org. HOWARD COUNTY 4-H T-SHIRTS Back another year by popular demand!! The process has begun again and we are in the process of planning for the 2016 4-H t-shirts all Howard County 4-H’ers receive to wear at the Howard County Fair. In this Cloverleaf, please find the sponsorship form. If you know of a business or organization that may be interested, please pass along the letter and form enclosed. If additional forms are needed, they can be found on our website www.howard4-h.org. We are anticipating great success so all our 4-H’ers have a t-shirt at no cost! DESIGN CONTEST Have you seen the last few designs our t-shirt winner created? Would you like to be one of them? Then you may want to read on. The 4-H team is looking for someone to design the front of the t-shirt. We are looking for a black and white computer generated design that includes the official clover. All t-shirt designs are due no later than Friday, April 22tnd. 4-H Cloverleaf Page 3 RECORD BOOK INFORMATION! CLOVER BOOKS - Clovers have a special Clover Report Form for their record book. All forms are on the web. JUNIOR/INTERMEDIATE BOOKS -Information on how to do a book, complete the Summary Form and Project Records are on the web. SENIOR BOOKS - All seniors will have to complete a resume and essay as part of their record book. All information is on the web. Skill Level Books for all projects will be due to your club leader for all age levels, along with your record book and will be reviewed and returned immediately, so you may continue working from them. Summary Report Form that goes into the record book is the same for Juniors and Seniors. This form is used to record all years in 4-H. All of your past summary records not on the present form are to be placed in the book so we can see your progress. These will also be available at the workshops. Record books are due to the County Office no later than February 1st. Remember your book will need to be turned in to your club leader first so check with your club to verify the due date. *NEW*- General Project Record Form Attention Howard County 4-H Members! A NEW general project form is on the web. The formatting is similar to the livestock records. Be sure to use the current forms posted on the website. SENIOR PORTFOLIOS ATTENTION all senior 4-H’ers. It is time to begin thinking about applying for Out of State Trips. These are wonderful and rewarding opportunities for senior 4-H members. They are “once in a lifetime” experiences! Please consider submitting your senior portfolio by Friday, January 15th to the State 4-H Office On-line. Essay Theme: "Write an essay on your most memorable 4-H experience that will highlight the positive experiences you have had in 4-H and what you would share with someone 10 or 20 years from now.” Criteria for the essay:1.) Length – no more than two pages. 2.) Double spaced 3.)Margins no less than 1 inch 4.)Font Size no less than 12 pt. 5.) Font type - Times New Roman. MARYLAND 4-H HORSE ART CONTESTMARYLAND HORSE WORLD EXPO The 2016 Maryland 4-H Horse World Expo will be held January 22-24. Maryland 4-H will be holding their annual Maryland 4-H Horse Art Contest again this year. For more Information please visit- . https:// extension.umd.edu/cecilcounty/4-h-youth/2016horse-world-expo-4-h-artcontest Page 4 SUNSHINE CLOVER CLUB JUNIOR LEADERS Leadership is a life skill that will be needed through-out one’s entire life. 4-H exposes a member to multiple opportunities to participate in a leadership role. 4-H Cloverleaf SEWING WORKSHOP We will be hosting a community service opportunity for all sewing you and anyone thinking about carrying the sewing project. Please come and join us for the morning. Monday, January 18th at the Howard County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to Noon. We will be sewing pillowcases for youth cancer patients and all donations will be given to Cases for Smiles Foundation. Last year the 4-H group of sewing youth were able to complete 20 pillowcases, and this year we are hoping to double that amount. If you have your own sewing machine please bring with you that day, however we will have machines available to use as well. 4-H FASHION REVUE Sunshine Clovers is looking for Livestock and General Junior Leaders for 2016. General Junior Leaders– assist with club programming. Livestock Junior Leadersteach Clovers about livestock and participate in the Clover Livestock Showmanship. Areas of Interest: Assist with leading a business meeting Lead a program Give a demonstration Helping with crafts Reporter for the club Historian for the club Assist with club workshops Like working with kids.? The central cluster’s annual Fashion Revue, which gives 4-H’ers a chance to demonstrate their fashion sense and their sewing and modeling skills and talents. To participate in the Fashion Revue, you must first attend the judging. Judging will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2016; starting at 4:00 PM at the Montgomery County Extension Office. The Fashion Show will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016, 6:00 pm at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. Details on the Fashion Revue theme, application forms, and other information will follow from our youth leaders and committee members. LIVESTOCK SALE COMMITTEE YOUTH REPRESENTATIVE The Howard County 4-H Livestock Sale Committee’s role is to provide management of all aspects of the 4-H Livestock Sale held in conjunction with the Howard County Fair. The committee meets annually on the third Thursday of January, April, June, September and November. During these meetings policies, procedures and decisions regarding the livestock sale are determined and implemented. In addition, committee members undertake tasks throughout the year to ensure a successful sale. The Howard County 4-H Livestock Sale Committee is currently seeking senior age 4-H members to serve as youth representatives on the committee for 2016. This is an exciting opportunity that offers 4-H members an opportunity to gain and extend leadership skills. While a youth member appointed to a position will not have voting writes, the youth member will represent and provide a voice for the 4-H youth selling animals in the 4-H Livestock Sale. LIVESTOCK RATE OF GAIN REQUIREMENTS Beef Steers, Market Lambs, and Market Pigs will have minimum “rate-of-gain” required to show in 2016. This means that market animals will have to gain a certain amount per day from Tag-In Day to the County Fair: SHEEP .40 lbs. per day SWINE 1.50 lbs. per day BEEF 2.00 lbs. per day MARKET GOAT .20 lbs. per day BEEF ID DAY On Saturday, January 9, 2016, we will tag and weigh all beef and dairy steer projects. In December, a letter with detailed information will be mailed to all members enrolled in the beef or dairy steer project. If you know of a 4-H’er who will be carrying this project for the 1st time in 2015, please advise them to call the office for a packet.
