Connecting
global experts for
child healthcare
Great Ormond Street Hospital uses collaboration
to securely and reliably link doctors from around
the world for time-sensitive consultations and
ground-breaking research teamwork.
“With faster access to care, we can reduce time spent in the
hospital and free beds for more patients.”
- Michael Bone, Interim ICT Director, Great Ormond Street Hospital
for Children, NHS Foundation Trust
A doctor in London receives an urgent consult request from Ireland. A
decision needs to be made quickly. Using video, the doctors can discuss
options in real time.
• Access quality child healthcare quickly from
remote or local areas
Challenges
• Consult with specialists from around the world
for immediate superior treatment
• Connect experts from different fields to form
virtual medical teams
From its modest beginnings in 1852, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children
(GOSH) has become an international center of excellence in pediatric healthcare.
GOSH receives more than 200,000 visits from children referred from doctors
across the United Kingdom and abroad.
Over the past several years, GOSH upgraded its wired and wireless networks
with a Cisco® architecture. Building on this secure, reliable infrastructure, GOSH
strives to deliver technologies that improve the patient and staff experience.
GOSH identified the opportunity to help doctors from around the world work
together to treat patients faster with reliable video, chat, and collaboration tools.

“Many of the children that we’re treating are living with rare or complex
conditions that are only studied by doctors at a handful of hospitals,” says
Michael Bone, interim ICT director at GOSH. “The doctors often work together
on researching cures. They want ways to share promising new information and
treatments that can help their young patients get well.”
Improved care, faster consultations, and a
better patient experience
Solutions
• There are more eyes on care while in the
hospital and greater access to expertise
• Doctors at leading hospitals connect and consult
from anywhere with video
• Results are shorter hospital stays and timely
follow-up with patients after they’re discharged
Extend telephony with video
Patients with complex conditions may need input from a dozen people to
share information and plan treatment options. With the Cisco Jabber® solution,
doctors can join video meetings with their computers or mobile devices. Cisco
Jabber technology also gives hospitals and consultants a single contact point to
communicate with doctors, no matter where they are.

AVAILABILITY
GOSH clinicians collaborate with researchers at
leading children’s hospitals around the world. Video
reduces travel needs while enabling doctors to
continue working together effectively.
Incorporate video into meetings
Many patients come from across the United Kingdom or even the world, so
visits to GOSH can be costly and stressful. Using video, doctors and nurses
can easily meet and consult with patients or follow up with patients after they’re
discharged. Patients have shorter hospital stays, which enables GOSH to provide
timely care to more patients.
Delivering quality on a secure, reliable network
Working with Cisco Gold Certified Partner, Block Solutions, for planning,
deployment, and managed support, GOSH followed the Cisco Architecture
Network Blueprint for the NHS to plan the desired outcome for business goals.
GOSH achieves nearly 100 percent network availability with mere seconds
of downtime annually and can advance electronic x-ray, prescription, and
document systems to help process and share information faster.
