We are so excited so excited to continue to s-t-re-t-c-h our brains in second grade! This Week’s Highlights Reading – Students worked really hard at recognizing how fiction writers often use nonliteral language to enhance their text descriptions through figurative language. This recognition helped students enhance their understanding of the mentor text, The Wolf’s Story: What Really Happened to Little Red Riding Hood, written by, Toby Forward. Students created personal similes comparing three different characteristics of themselves to an object or animal using the words like or as. The final product was an interactive foldable that will be displayed on SeeSaw. Writing: Students studied the elements of the porquoi tale. Porquoi means “why” in French. A porquoi tale explains why something in the natural world is the way it is. An example of this is a tale students read entitled, The Peacock and Crow: A folktale from Thailand, retold by Lana Stu This folktale explained why the crow Krumwaide. is the color black (he was so hungry by the time the peacock painted his white feathers, he told her to simply splash black paint on him!). Students will be writing a series of short stories using specific elements of folktales, fairy tales, and fables. Selection day will partake after break! Math – Students learned how to read the clock to and from the quarter hours. They also learned the difference between a.m. and p.m. as they worked with time duration and timetables. Students concluded module 4 with learning that our calendar week starts with Sunday and ends on Saturday. This important information made a seamless connection to the simple abbreviations S for Sunday and S for Saturday that is found at the end of the week.
