Letter from the Principal
Dear Linwood Families and Friends,
During this month of Thanksgiving, I would like to
thank you for your contributions to Linwood. Your
work as part of our PTA, volunteering in the
classroom, chaperoning field trips or family events,
working with your child on homework, reading with
your child and encouraging them to always do
their best makes our community a wonderful
place. Mostly, I thank you for allowing me to be
with your child daily. Linwood students bring joy to
my life each day!
It was great to see many of you at our Parent/
Teacher conferences. Our teachers are always
happy and excited to share with you the amazing
things your children are doing. Please check out our school and district, state
report cards posted on our website under the
“About Us” tab. You may also access these in our
school office. Join us for the 5th grade vs Staff basketball game
6:30 PM Friday, Nov. 13 at Alder Creek Middle
School. The funds raised from this game go
toward BizTown for 4th and 5th grade students.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Notes from the Music Room
My name is Dave Noyes, I am the music specialist for Linwood Elementary. I am so excited to get to spend another year working
with your amazing students on singing, playing instruments, movement, music literacy, and so much more!
WINTER CONCERT
Linwood Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students will be performing in our annual Winter Concert on Thursday December 10th
in the Linwood Cafeteria. We will have two performances: daytime at 1PM and evening at 5:30PM (doors open at 5PM). Parents
and friends are welcome to attend both performances. Linwood student performances are always free of charge. Look for
more detailed information in your student’s Monday folder.
SPRING PERFORMANCE DATES
All Linwood student performances are held in the Linwood Cafeteria. Please mark your calendars!

3RD GRADE RECORDER ORDERS
3rd grade recorder orders were due Friday Nov 6th. If your student does not already own a recorder and they have not ordered
one yet, please get your order in as soon as possible! Recorders cost $6, books (optional) cost $4. If you would like to order both
as a “combo”, the cost is $8 (we get a discount from our vendor). Please turn order forms and money into Ms. McGean or Ms.
DuVal. Additional order forms are available from classroom teachers and from Mr. Noyes. We should receive our recorders in
mid-December and will start working with them in music class in January.
3RD, 4TH, AND 5TH RECORDER INFO
Please remind your student that their recorder should be kept in their backpack. Students will need to practice recorder at home
for 5 minutes every day - any quiet location in your home should work. Students will also need to bring their recorders with them
to music class starting in November for 4th and 5th grade students.
CONCERT AND EVENT PARKING: Parking at Linwood is very limited. Additional parking will be available at the Ukrainian Church
(west of Linwood, behind our lot and field). Please consider carpooling. DO NOT BLOCK DRIVEWAYS AND PARK IN LEGAL SPACES
ONLY.
Thanks for supporting music education at Linwood!

these locations will not be updated.)

Notes from the Nurse
What should I do to protect myself from the flu
this season?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age
and older as the first and most important step in protecting
against this serious disease. People should begin getting
vaccinated soon after flu vaccine becomes available, if possible by
October, to ensure that as many people as possible are protected
before flu season begins. However, as long as flu viruses are
circulating in the community, it’s not too late to get vaccinated.
In addition to getting a seasonal flu vaccine, or if you have not
already been vaccinated, you can take everyday preventive
actions like staying away from people who are ill and washing your
hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay
home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others.
Family Shelters
With the sudden drop in temperature, there is a concern for a lot of
families and individuals that are homeless - on the streets, in their
cars, camping, or in other unsheltered situations. Page 3 of 6
Counselors
Here are some things I remember from 2nd grade, in no particular
order:
-Mrs. DeClair, my teacher, seemed really old. She also told us stories
about when she was a little girl in Holland, and we sang songs from
her homeland.
-I had cold lunch every day EXCEPT Fridays because that was Cheese
Yum-Yum day and there wasn’t a kid alive who could say no to
Cheese Yum-Yums. (By the way, Cheese Yum-Yums were grilled
cheese sandwiches. They were amazing, and I’m not really sure why
and I don’t care. I would eat 20 today if I had the chance!).
-We didn’t sit in rows like all the other classes, we sat in community
groups of four desks. (more on that later). Mrs. DeClair was ahead of
her time.
-I had a green comb with the words touchdown on it and I combed
my amazing bowl cut hair as often as I could. -At recess I played football every day for the whole year.
Family Winter Shelter - open 7pm-7am every night. No intake
required, just show up (suggested families arrive at 6:30). Families
only! 16141 E Burnside, Portland. Max Yellow Line and Trimet #20.
-This was the first year I realized I was overweight and the first year I
ever felt bullied.
Emergency Warming Centers - open when temperatures drop
below freezing and/or near freezing. With all the positive memories I shared, that last one is the one that
affected me the most. Remember our community groups. There
was one girl in my group who let me know every day that I was fat,
ugly, stupid or just a loser. The two other community members
backed her up because they were all friends. It was miserable for me
for a part of the year, and I didn’t tell anybody. I felt totally alone and
was embarrassed to get help.
Clackamas Service Center - 8800 SE 80th Ave, Portland
- open to anyone
Father's Heart - 603 12th St, Oregon City
- adults only
**Families/Individuals can also call 211 for additional emergency
shelter resources.
Holiday Assistance
In these difficult economic times, we know that many
families could use some support over the holidays.
Our counselors and school office are attempting to
connect families with resources and donors.
Holiday Assistance forms can be found in the main
office and need to be returned by December 6,
2015.
Families must be home to accept the holiday boxes
on December 19th from 8am- 12pm.
If you have any questions, please contact our school
counselors at (503)353-5460 x35464.
When you get the chance talk to your kids about what bullying looks
like. Remember the definition of bullying is REPEATED intimidation
that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. Talk to your kids
about what to do if they see bullying happening around them. (they
can befriend the victim, confront the bully or tell an adult they know
and trust). Make sure they know that bystanders, kids who are
witnessing the bullying, have the most power to help the victim and
stop the bullying. We strive to make Linwood Elementary a safe, fun
and successful learning environment for your kids. We take bullying
very seriously and we want our kids to do the same. For all the
information on bullying that I couldn’t fit into my limited newsletter
space, take a look at Stopbullying.gov. Great informational site.
By the way, want to know my favorite of all time 2nd grade memory? It was when my bully told her friends she was moving away. That was
like getting free Cheese Yum-Yums for life!!! :)
-Mr. W
Thank you! Thank You!
