Animal Husbandry & Quality Assurance
The 2016 Maryland 4-H On-Line Animal
Husbandry and Quality Assurance (AH&QA) program is now open and
will remain open through July 30, 2016.
All 4-H members enrolled in alpacas, beef,
dairy, goats, horse and pony, llamas, poultry and eggs, sheep, swine and rabbits are
required to complete the on-line QA training.
If a 4-H member will exhibit their project
animals and/or eggs in the 2016 Maryland County 4-H and State 4-H Shows then
QA needs to be completed by July 30 to be
eligible.
*If you have aged up into a new age category this year or started a new animal
project including eggs for a Poultry project you will need to do the QA.
The 2016 program must be completed using Firefox, Chrome or Safari web browsers. The program is
not supported by Internet Explorer.
The program contains two levels, a Junioraged Level and an Intermediate/Senioraged Level. The program automatically
directs members to the correct level
based on their birthdate. 4-Hers are required to complete the on-line training
program when they reach each 4-H age
division (juniors (8-10), intermediates
(11-13), seniors (14-18) – all as of January
1 of the current year) OR when an Intermediate or Senior 4-H member chooses to
show a new species since last completing
the program within their age division they
must return to program and complete the
program for the new species area. (The
Junior program does not have species specific sections like the Intermediate/Senior
program does). Passcodes from 2015
should still be viable for members. Members with passcodes issued prior to 2015
must register to receive a new passcode..
Members may access the AH&QA program
at: http://www.agnr.umd.edu/ahqa/
If you are not sure if you need to take the
QA contact Lisa lstrong@umd.edu to find
out.

News from Mr. Todd
Spring is finally here and the weather has given us
some ups and downs, but the changes are really
wonderful. Just like spring has started here for us, I
am starting to feel a little more comfortable in my
role here in Frederick County and I cannot thank you
enough for helping me get there. It has been a busy
past few months. We got off to a great start with our
camp counselor training beginning in February. We
have 16 great counselors getting ready for an exciting summer camp season.
Additionally, we hosted an Officer Training that took
place over spring break. Donielle held a session on
the nuts and bolts of parliamentary procedures and
what it means to hold an Officer’s position and I
spent time with the Officers teaching them some
new games and activities they could use to take back
to their respective clubs to foster a sense of team
work and cohesiveness within their membership.
We also held our spring Club Leaders meeting. Nearly all of the clubs were represented. Record books
were returned and lots of information was given out
about upcoming activities in the county. Overall, the
start of spring has been great. I am looking forward
to more exciting things to come. Summer is just
around the corner and I am eager to see what it has
in store for all of us.
Again, thank you for all the help and support you
have shown me. I am truly appreciative and look forward to future adventures.
Todd McKinney,
Frederick County 4-H Educator
A Note from Ms. Donielle
Helen Keller once stated, “Life is a succession of lessons which must
be lived to be understood.”
In the 4-H world we are living those life lessons and skills everyday
as we “learn my doing” with our project work. As we enter our
spring months we are provided many opportunities within our clubs
to teach others the skills we have learned and improved with our 4H projects. Through demonstrations and public speaking we provide others the gift of knowledge through our experiences.
I challenge each of you as 4-H’ers to sign up for a communication
activity with your club in 2016. Whether it is leading the pledge,
presenting a committee report, helping with a workshop or providing a demonstration at your club meeting, you have the ability to
impact others through your expression of speech.
As a young 4-H member I was very nervous to speak in front of my
local club. At the age of 9 I had competed nationally with my dance
team in front of 1,000’s of people, but I was terrified to talk to 20
other 4-H members about my steer project. It was through the encouragement of my club leader Mary Runkles with the Unionville 4H Club and the support of our 4-H volunteers that I learned how to
practice my public speaking. 10 years later as a senior 4-H member,
I was giving demonstrations on a state level, and teaching younger
4-H’ers here in Frederick County how to improve on their life skills
in their 4-H projects.
As 4-H’ers in 2016 the 4-H Office offers workshops and activities to
help you in your projects. Take advantage of all the learning opportunities afforded to you. In order to grow as individuals we have to
experience the world around us. Take the time today to select one
of your 4-H projects, which you would like to share with others, and
make a plan to help others grow their 4-H knowledge.
Donielle Axline,
Frederick County 4-H Educator

The 4-H Achievers Club
In the month of February, our club created and decorated posters, a booth, and a display board for Ag Week at the Mall, to promote 4-H, FFA, and agriculture to the public. Our Frederick
County 4-H Extension Educator, Todd McKinney visited our
March 4-H club meeting. While he was there, my club and I
showed him all of the hard work we put into our posters, and we
also presented him with many hats for the hat donation drive.
The 4-H Achievers are busy preparing for many spring events.

On February 18, 2016 from 4-8 pm at AG Week at the Francis Scott

The club demonstrated robots built for the State Fair competitions.
The senior team’s VEX robot was demonstrated by James and two
members of the intermediate team Jonathan and Ceri showed how
their EV3 Mind Storm Lego robot completed its recycling tasks. There
were also snap circuits for the kids to play around with and learn
about circuits in a fun way with the help of Madison and Zachary. Fiona showed kids how to battle with Sumo Bots. Daniel was busy taking
apart a laptop so passersby could get an idea of how it worked. Brothers Kevin and Calvin demonstrated their Lego robots they had built in
their beginners class. The demonstration proved successful when
three new members decided to join. Mason, Ethan, and Dean joined
after being inspired by the AG Week demonstrations at FSK Mall.

Calico Clovers 4-H Update!
by Abby Sharp
Hello 4-H Fans!
The Calico Clovers 4-H Club of
Jefferson met on Sunday, February 18th. Along with reviewing
“old business” and upcoming
events, we enjoyed two special
presentations. First, Sara brought
in her Winter White Hamster,
“Delta” for a visit. We learned that these nocturnal animals usually turn white in their native winter habitat. Everyone got to
pet her while Sara told us about their diet of meats, veggies, and
grains. Delta gets her nightly exercise on a very squeaky wheel!
Then we participated in a demonstration by Dr. Polly Matzinger
of NIH, known worldwide for her advancing the study of immunology. She helped us understand how vaccines help keep us,
and our livestock, healthy. She performs heart transplants on
mice to study how immune systems respond. The fun and cool
part Dr Matzinger (with Rileigh) had planned for the kids was to
practice giving vaccine shots to oranges! We learned that if you poke
the vaccine needle too deeply into
the person or animal they could
lose their life! This was good practice, because I’m pretty sure that
my orange did not survive.
Finally, we had a fun and productive time on February 28th
making crafts to enter at the Fair. Five more blankets were
made for the Brunswick American Legion, along with the pillows, bobble heads, candle holders, and more! Many thanks to
Sally Arnold and all of the “Craft Coaches” who made it possible.
The Jefferson 4-H Calico Clovers monthly meeting was
held March 17th. We were proud to contribute to the
120 blankets the American Legion will be taking to the
Martinsburg VA Center in May.
Demonstrations this month were “Sweet”, “Kind”, and
“Nurturing”.
 The Sweet: Zach showed us how to make sweet
Candy Pretzel Melts, and Meghan taught us to do
fancy cupcake frosting.
 The Kind: Morgan and Ava showed their lamb, injured and abandoned by its mother, that they are
nursing back to health with skill and kindness.
 The Nurturing: Christine took us through a slideshow about incubating eggs. She brought in a full
grown Rhode Island Red and an Easter Egger for an
up-close look.
Then the young Clovers showed-off the felt bunnies,
eggs, and shamrocks they made during the meeting. On
March 16th. It was an honor to serve dinner to more
than 50 people at the Jefferson Ruritan. We had a great
time providing ham, potatoes, green beans and dessert
to the folks who do so much to serve our community!
Upcoming Events; April 12th - Achievement Night at the
4-H Camp Center. April 23rd - we’ll make a “Clean
Sweep” cleanup of Cap Stine Rd. Meet at the Park ‘n
Ride on Mt Zion Rd. at 9:00 am. June 28 - plans are in
the works for a field trip to Sky Zone, and a tour of a Fire
Station. Our next meeting will be on April 21st at the
Jefferson United Church of Christ. David Muns will
demonstrate the important work of Bee-Keeping.
If you are thinking about joining us for the next Calico
Clovers Club meeting, please plan to come to our meeting on April 21st, 2016 at the United Church of Christ in
Jefferson at 7 pm.

Johnsville 4-H Club
In February Johnsville 4-H Club participated in activities
during Ag Week at the FSK Mall. We entered a club display
and poster to be displayed during this event. Some members participated in the coloring contest. As a Club we
churned both Raspberry and Cookies & Cream ice cream
during the Ice Cream making Contest. It was a lot a fun.
Also, Johnsville club members Zachary, Baylee and Caleb
participated in the Communication Contest that was held
in Howard County on March 12th. Baylee & Caleb were
selected to compete at State level in April. Congratulations Zachary, Baylee & Caleb! Good luck to those moving
on to State!
February 19th
Johnsville hosted
Bingo for the residence of Homewood, we gave
handmade crafts
as prizes. Each resident that attends
bingo receives a
prize. Both the residents & 4-H members alike really
enjoy this community service activity. Our club hosted
a “paint night” activity where club
members and their
families, could sign up to hand paint a barn scene on canvas. The Paintings all turned out so good.
During the Linganore Grange #410 March meeting, Marshall & Gracie did a demonstration for the Grange members, Gracie did a visual presentation on how to judge a
pig and Marshall did a demonstration on how to make
hand scrub. Ella read a prepared speech for the Grange
members on our 4-H club. Both
Luke & Jacob received awards for
Outstanding Johnsville Club Members for 2015. The trophies were
presented to Luke & Jacob by Linganore Grange; they also served
light refreshments to the 4-H
members after the awards were
presented. On Sunday, March 13 the Libertytown Unionville Lions Club hosted a
breakfast, Johnsville 4-H
members provided and sold
baked goods during the
breakfast as a Community
Service. The proceeds from
the breakfast and baked
goods table were donated to
a local family to help with
medical expenses for a 10 year old boy that was involved
in an accident in October. It was a huge turn out during
this event.
March was another action
packed month.
Our club held a
craft day, members had a choice
to make pillow
cases or no sew
blanket. These
items can be entered in the 4-H Building during fair. Club
Members Ella, Justin & Jacob, Kendall and Amanda participated in the 4H
Skillathon Contest that was
held in Hagerstown on March
5th. Kendall was
given the opportunity to try out
for the State Team. Congratulations Kendall!
During the Johnsville March club
meeting members rotated to different judging stations. We had a
station for Swine judging, Dairy
judging, Poultry & Egg judging
and Equine judging. This program was very informative to the
club members.
Upcoming Johnsville 4-H events activities include:
craft evening, Homewood bingo, Gladhill tractor pull food
booth fundraiser.

“Fire Power” 4-H Shooting Sports Club
Some Club members worked extra hard recently to fine tune
their Trap shooting skills to be better prepared while representing 4-H Shooting Sports this year. Many are also members
of the Amateur Trap Association's (ATA) youth program "AIM"
which stands for Academics, Integrity and Marksmanship and
have plans to participate in local, State and National Trap
shooting matches this year.
Kyle recently shot his first "25 Straight" (with
out a miss) in a round of Trap at Thurmont
Conservation and Sportsman's Club. He thinks
it had something to do with his "lucky hat" he
bought in Sparta, IL last year, however most
have noticed his dedication, persistence, practice and extra effort to reach his goals have
much to do with his better scores lately.
Shooters earn a patch and are faced with a tradition for those who shoot their first 25, 50, 75
or 100 straight and to help them remember it- their peers get
to shoot their hat! While Kyle wouldn't let anyone shoot his
favorite hat, he had another that club members were eager to
shoot!
While the club's "Wildlife
Tracks" ice cream recipe
didn't place in the Ag
Week Ice Cream contest,
the club members
showed some real team
work when they had an
"equipment failure". They
each took turns hand
turning the tub with out a
crank to finish the ice
cream,
then lined
up to help
serve everyone who
wanted a
sample.
Despite any winter weather, John recently earned and received awards from
the Tri-State Winter
Trap League for
"Perfect Attendance"
and for "Most Improved" at the annual
banquet in Frederick.
Hunter was very focused and achieved a "50
Straight" earning a patch while practicing
recently.
During Ag Week in the
Mall club members
shared a hands on
Wildlife Identification
display with the public and inspired many
fun conversations.

Range Committee Club members took advantage of a nice weekend in February to
upgrade the ranges at the 4-H Camp & Activities Center and are making good progress. Builders First Source and M&M Environmental are some of the local businesses
that have generously donated supplies for
the range. Still much is needed, particularly
sheets of plywood (used scrap sheets are
fine) and lots of mulch. Donations are appreciated and tax deductible. If you can
help, contact us at shootingsports@frederickcounty4-h.org
