We also know that healthy kids learn better and healthy kids start with health coverage that their families can afford. Healthy Kids is Oregon’s expanded no-cost and low-cost health coverage program for uninsured kids and teens up to 19 years of age. Healthy Kids is comprehensive coverage offering medical, dental, vision, prescription, and behavioral health coverage. No family makes too much money for Healthy Kids. Parent’s income will determine whether a child is eligible for the no-cost or low-cost coverage option. For example, a family of four that earns as much as $69,383 a year may qualify for low-cost coverage. Your child or student can be a Healthy Kid! Your spine is made of 33 bones called vertebrae, and between the vertebrae are disks that act as natural shock absorbers. When you incorrectly place a heavy weight on your shoulders, such as a backpack filled with books, the weight's force can pull you backward. To compensate, you may bend forward at the hips or arch your back, and this can cause your spine to compress unnaturally. If you have to struggle to get your backpack on or off, if you have to lean forward to carry your pack, or if you have back pain, then the way you are using your backpack (either its overall weight or the method you use to carry it) may need to be adjusted. If you continue to have back pain or have numbness or weakness in your arms or legs, talk to your doctor. Also, carrying a heavy pack changes the way a person walks and increases the risk of falling, particularly on stairs or other places where the backpack puts the wearer off balance. Tips for Using Backpacks Here are a few tips that will help make your backpack work for you, not against you: " •" Limit your backpack load. Doctors and physical therapists recommend that people carry no more than 10% to 15% of their body weight in their packs. This means that if you weigh 120 pounds, your backpack should weigh no more than 12 to 18 pounds. Use your bathroom scale to weigh your backpack and get an idea of what the proper weight for you feels like. " •" Pick it up properly. As with any heavy weight, you should bend at the knees when lifting a backpack to your shoulders. " •" Strengthen your core. A great way to prevent back injury is to strengthen the stabilizing muscles of your torso, including your lower back and abdominal muscles. Weight training, Pilates, and yoga are all activities that can be effective in strengthening these core muscles. So what's the best way to carry a backpack? Learn from the hiking pros and wear both straps over your shoulders. Keep your load light enough so that you can easily walk or stand upright, and pack your backpack with the heaviest items closest to your back. information from www.TeensHealth.org *********************************************************************************************************** NEW AREA HEALTH & WELLNESS RESOURCES *Free Health Clinic & Resource Fair : COMPANION NORTH CLACKAMAS MINI CLINIC Sat. Something exciting is happening in education in Oregon, something that all parents will want to know about - the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These newly adopted standards in English Language Arts and Math are important for your student’s future success! Here’s why: The standards are the same wherever you go. Common standards mean that students in Oregon are learning the same thing as students across the country. Students moving into or out of Oregon will have a smoother educational transition because learning goals will now be the same across states. They’re modeled on success. The Common Core State Standards are aligned to international standards from the highest achieving countries. This means our students will be well prepared to compete both nationally and internationally. College and career ready is the name of the game. All students graduating college and career-ready is the goal of the CCSS. These standards are designed to prepare students for success in whatever they choose to do after graduation. Real life is really important. What students learn in school should be directly related to what they’ll be required to do once they leave. The Common Core places a strong emphasis on reading informational and technical texts to prepare students for the demands of college and the workplace. College should not begin with remediation. Too many students entering Oregon universities and community colleges require remedial classes in English and Math. The CCSS are designed to make that a problem of the past by fully preparing students for college-level coursework. Increased access to learning resources. Common standards mean that learning resources and teaching and learning materials can be shared across states. 21st century skills for 21st century jobs. These standards will prepare our students for career success in the rapidly changing world of work. Find out more about the Common Core on the ODE web site at http://www.ode.state.or.us/go/commoncore and check out the CCSS Parent Guides from the National PTA at www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?id=3398 Cada estudiante, cada día - un éxito!
