Houston Money Week (HMW) is a community-wide financial education initiative that empowers families and individuals to be successful with their financial choices. HMW serves individuals, families, veterans and small business owners across the greater Houston area, offering free financial education and raising awareness of available resources in the community. Each year in April, HMW partners—businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, nonprofits, government agencies and media outlets— come together to emphasize the importance of financial education, inform consumers where they can get assistance, and provide free educational seminars and activities. Although the activities are open to all demographics and income levels, historically HMW serves persons from primarily low and moderate income backgrounds. HMW covers 10 counties in the greater Houston area - Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto, and Waller counties. We recruit organizations that are interested in financial education who come together to plan and carry out free events during the week. Beginning in September, organizations sign a partner agreement, and commit to attending monthly planning meetings and actively participating in the development and execution of events. Campaigns are chaired and led by a team of volunteers from partner organizations such as GMGW. Houston Money Week activities can include but are not limited to: • A kick-off event to launch the week that garners media attention and gets the word out about the upcoming week of events. • Face-to-face educational programs taught by HMW Partners. These can be open to the public or provided to a specific group, such as a membership organization, clientele of a social service agency, or employees at their workplace. • Fairs or exhibits providing financial information. • Webinars, conference calls, or social media events. • Student essay contests.
