Purpose of this Form
This form is to be used for considering and recommending progression/promotion to Grade F Lecturer
(Education and Scholarship) for existing Associate Lecturer (Education and Scholarship).
Notes
1. The Associate Dean for Education should carry out an initial assessment, supported by the Academic
Lead and the HRBP for the College of: (a) whether there is an ongoing need for work at the higher level;
and (b) the skills and competences of the member of staff by reference to the appropriate promotion
criteria for staff in the Education and Scholarship Career Path including the requirement for HEA
recognition at the relevant level. The HRBP for the College should also be involved in this assessment.
2. If the Associate Dean for Education is satisfied then the member of staff should submit a written case
using this form to include evidence against the listed criteria. Associate Lecturers should use the right
hand column to give appropriate evidence of their achievements against the criteria listed.
3. The College Dean should discuss the case with their HR Business Partner. If the College Dean is
satisfied that there is a case for considering promotion the form should be completed.
4. If the Dean is unable to support the application, they should explain their reasons to the member of staff
who has the right to make a personal submission.
5. The application will be considered by a panel normally comprising of the College Dean (Chair of Panel),
the College Associate Dean for Education and up to three other academics from appropriate academic
disciplines. The panel will:
o
conduct an initial assessment of the submitted evidence against the appropriate promotion
criteria;
o
interview the member of staff, who may also be required to make a presentation in support of
their application and answer questions on the evidence presented.
6. The College will notify the staff member of the arrangements for interview. The purpose of the interview
is to establish the suitability of the member of staff for promotion to Lecturer.
7. The panel will make a recommendation to the line managing Deputy Vice-Chancellor on whether the
promotion criteria have been met. The decision on promotion will be taken by the Deputy ViceChancellor.
8. If the Deputy Vice-Chancellor is satisfied that the member of staff should progress to grade F, the
employee will be promoted with effect from the 1st of the month following the date on which the Dean
has completed the form.

student support.

Mentor GTAs, if this opportunity is available within the
discipline.
Take an innovative role in a specific area of student

involved manner
Manage matters within their scope of their teaching,
i.e. day to day module matters, and some
administrative module responsibilities

students for whom you are responsible.

Communicate subject knowledge in a format that is
accessible to all students in an achievable context.
Develop and share appropriate approaches to
teaching and learning support and scholarly activities,
responding to pedagogical and practical challenges
within the limited teaching context available to
Associate Lecturers.
Share personal good practice within the teaching team

Qualifications/recognition; Staff working at this level must be undertaking the activities listed to a successful and effective standard
Staff at this level are expected to achieve Associate
Fellow of the HEA within 2 years of appointment (prorata for part-time staff) and attend formal CPD relating
to this (LTHE and/or subsequently PCAP).
This should be a minimum requirement for all
University teachers at this level.
Qualifications/recognition; in order to be considered for promotion to the next grade, staff should be able to
demonstrate evidence of excellence in some of the above activities and be able to demonstrate over a sustained
period they are performing the following to a satisfactory and effective standard.
If not already a Fellow of the HEA then the
promotion/appointment panel should be satisfied that
there is evidence that the member of staff is working
toward Fellowship of the HEA .
