Guidelines for the 2014 Washington County 4-H Youth Development Educational Scholarships Purpose To help members of 4-H clubs in Washington County continue their formal education beyond high school. Scholarship Types Dairy, Market Sale and Mildred Schmid scholarships are awarded each year, the amount and number of scholarships to be awarded will be determined by January 1 of each year. The scholarship award winners will be announced at the Washington County 4-H Recognition Program. The Market Sale Scholarship recipient will also be announced during the 4-H Market Sale at the Washington County Ag Expo & Fair. Qualifications A.) Each applicant must be a graduating senior or currently enrolled as a college freshman. B.) Each applicant must have been accepted as a full-time student to an accredited college, university or technical school by the time of payment. Some preference will be given those studying in an agricultural or animal-related career. Application A.) Each applicant must submit a completed application form by the deadline of Monday, February 3, 2014. B.) Each applicant must include his or her most recent official transcript, signed by a high school guidance counselor or college advisor. C.) Each applicant completing a home school curriculum must submit a copy of their transcript signed by an approved program evaluator. D.) Each applicant must include two letters of recommendation from people who are unrelated to the applicant. Each letter must be in a sealed envelope, bearing the reference’s signature across the sealed flap. E.) Each applicant must include a photograph of him/herself. F.) Each applicant must include the essay responses required for each scholarship for which he/she is applying. Limitations A.) An applicant can only win each scholarship one time. B.) The award will be made based on the decision of the selection committee. The committee’s decision is final. C.) Should the scholarship winner fail to complete at least one semester at an accredited college, university or technical school within the calendar year of the award, the committee can rescind the award. D.) The committee reserves the right not to award a scholarship. Procedures A.) Deadline—The application package must be received in the University of Maryland Extension Office- Washington County, 7303 Sharpsburg Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland, 21713, on or before February 3, 2014. No exceptions will be made. 1|Page B.) The scholarship award will be paid directly to the college, university or technical school on behalf of the winner by the Community Foundation of Washington County. Additional Dairy Scholarship Requirements 1.) Each applicant must be a 4-H member in good standing, and has completed at least the second year of a dairy project. 2.) In 600 words or less, describe your dairy project(s). Include the number of animals and tell what activities you have participated in as well as what demonstrations and projects were presented. Explain what you have learned from the project(s) and how this project knowledge will benefit you in the future. (12 pt. font; double spaced) 3.) In 100 words or less, explain why you have chosen your career path. (12 pt. font; double spaced) Additional Market Sale Scholarship Requirements 1.) Each applicant must be a 4-H member in good standing, and have sold livestock for a minimum of two years. 2.) In 600 words or less, describe your 4-H market project(s) and how, through these projects, you have developed your leadership, problem solving and management skills. (12 pt. font; double spaced) 3.) In 100 words or less, explain why you have chosen your career path. (12 pt. font; double spaced) Additional Mildred A. Schmid Scholarship Requirements 1.) Each applicant must be a 4-H member in good standing. Preference for this scholarship will go to an individual who has done outstanding work in the 4-H Dog Project. Those not in the Dog Project may apply. 2.) Applicants must submit a 3 page research paper (12 pt. font; double spaced) with bibliography on a topic pertaining to dogs. A suggested list of possible topics follows: a. Breeds of Dogs b. Dogs with Jobs c. Feeding/Nutrition d. Care & Grooming e. Puppy Health & Training f. Training your Dog g. Breeding & Selling h. Pets as Therapy i. Dog Health – Parasites/Diseases/Zoonosis j. Choosing the Family Dog k. Organizations that support Dog Welfare 3.)
