This is a very exciting time to be at the University of Exeter, especially as we start a year of celebration to mark our Diamond Jubilee. For the first time this year we have been ranked in the top 10 of all three major UK higher education league tables at the same time. Our research reputation continues to grow, with an excellent result at the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and in the latest Leiden Rankings, where we are rated 6th in the UK, 8th in Europe, and 34th in the world for our scientific impact and collaboration. All this further secures our place at the very top table of UK universities, which means that you have worked very hard to earn a place here, so well done! I appreciate that there is a lot for you to take in when you first arrive at university, which is why we set aside this first week entirely for new students. I hope you find this time useful for understanding how your programme of study works, exploring the campus and the local area, and getting to know new friends. Our campuses are truly wonderful places to live and study, with some of the best facilities and support of any university in the UK, and they provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, innovative programmes and a great student experience. And remember, our experienced staff and dedicated student Welcome Team are on hand throughout the week to help you settle in to university life. For new undergraduates, a key date for your calendar is Grand Challenges. Grand Challenges is the summer showpiece conclusion to your first year. It’s a unique chance to collaborate with top academics and industry experts in finding solutions to the world’s problems, and will hone the skills you’ve developed during the year as well as introducing you to many more. On behalf of all my colleagues I hope that you will have a truly wonderful time here. We look forward to supporting you to achieve the highest academic standards in your chosen programme, and your hopes and aspirations for the future. You’re probably fed up with everyone telling you that university was the best time of their lives. Yes, it can be great but the first few days and weeks can be a rollercoaster of emotions. You arrive with a suitcase full of stuff and a head full of expectations. You’re surrounded by new people who are all trying to make an impression. It may look as if everybody else knows what they’re doing, but many don’t. If you are thriving in this environment then that’s fantastic. But if you’re not, please don’t worry; you’re not alone. You don’t have to make all your new friends in the first few days. You don’t need to have all your timetable and classes sorted out straight away, and you definitely don’t have to know everything by the end of Freshers’ Week. Transition can take time and it isn’t a process you can rush. It’s important to us that you feel settled and secure throughout your time studying with us. However, there are some things you must do as a new student. If you feel overwhelmed in the first few days, then concentrate on getting these things done, and the rest can wait: Visit the Student Information Desk in Peter Lanyon Building Meet your supervisor or Personal Tutor There are plenty of support services to help you. You can access them via email, web, or personal appointments. See the list on p18. IEXETER If you have a smartphone you can download our free University of Exeter app, iExeter, which is available from the App Store and Google Play. Keep it on your smartphone for University information throughout the year about your timetable, library, social activities, and much more. 5 GETTING INVOLVED Participating in activities on campus is a great way of meeting people, making friends, building networks, and maybe even adding experiences and responsibility to your CV. There are a huge amount of events taking place across the University during Freshers’ Week, organised by the 61 clubs and societies and the 44 sports clubs. Each society has at least one activity planned, many of which are free taster sessions. All societies charge varying membership fees, so why not try a free activity before you join? You can join a student society online at any point in the year by visiting the societies page on FXU’s website: www.fxu.org.uk/sport_soc You can read more about our arts and culture and sport provision later in this guide. 6 ACADEMIC INDUCTION Academic Induction is your core timetable during Freshers’ Week, and your sessions may run across the whole week. All other activities must fit around these. Most societies put on multiple events during Freshers’ Week and early in your first term, so if there is a clash check the online events guide to see when you can catch your favourite society at another time. You can view your personal Academic Induction timetable via iExeter and exehub. If there are any issues with your timetable please contact the Student Information Desk in Peter Lanyon Building. Your Academic Induction will include: Welcome from your Head of College/ Discipline cademic support and representation in A your College nderstand your programme structure U and the year ahead Meet your personal tutor Meet your fellow students Finalise your modules F amiliarise yourself with your academic building The Business School www.exeter.ac.uk/business/ugfreshers www.exeter.ac.uk/business/pgfreshers Accounting and Finance, Economics, Business, Management, Marketing and Tourism College of Humanities www.exeter.ac.uk/humanities/freshers Archaeology, Art History and Visual Culture, Classics, Drama, English, Film, History, Liberal Arts, Modern Languages and Theology College of Social Sciences and International Studies www.exeter.ac.uk/socialsciences/freshers Anthropology, Arab and Islamic Studies, Law, Criminology, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Strategy and Security Institute College of Life and Environmental Sciences www.exeter.ac.uk/lifesciences/freshers Biosciences, Geography, Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences www.exeter.ac.uk/emps/freshers Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Physics and Astronomy The University of Exeter Medical School www.exeter.ac.uk/medicine/freshers Medical Sciences, Medicine, Medical Imaging Flexible Combined Honours www.exeter.ac.uk/fch/freshers 7 INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL AND EU STUDENTS Studying abroad can be as challenging as it is exciting.
