WELCOME TO THE
UNIVERSITY OF EXETER
I’m delighted that you have chosen to study with us, and congratulations
on getting a place! This is a very exciting time to be at the University of
Exeter, especially as we start a year of celebration to mark our Diamond
Jubilee. For the first time this year we have been ranked in the top 10 of all three major
UK higher education league tables at the same time. Our research reputation continues to grow, with an excellent result at the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and in the
latest Leiden Rankings, where we are rated 6th in the UK, 8th in Europe, and 34th in the
world for our scientific impact and collaboration. All this further secures our place at the
very top table of UK universities, which means that you have worked very hard to earn a
place here, so well done!
I appreciate that there is a lot for you to take
in when you first arrive at university, which is
why we set aside this first week entirely for new
students. I hope you find this time useful for
understanding how your programme of study
works, exploring the campus and the local area,
and getting to know new friends.
Our campuses are truly wonderful places to live
and study, with some of the best facilities and
support of any university in the UK, and they
provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere,
innovative programmes and a great student
experience. And remember, our experienced staff and dedicated student Welcome Team are
on hand throughout the week to help you settle
in to university life.
For new undergraduates, a key date for your
calendar is Grand Challenges. Grand Challenges
is the summer showpiece conclusion to your
first year. It’s a unique chance to collaborate with
top academics and industry experts in finding
solutions to the world’s problems, and will hone
the skills you’ve developed during the year as well
as introducing you to many more.
On behalf of all my colleagues I hope that you
will have a truly wonderful time here. We look
forward to supporting you to achieve the highest
academic standards in your chosen programme,
and your hopes and aspirations for the future.

YOUR FIRST FEW DAYS
SETTLING IN
Starting a new course or joining university for
the first time can take some adjustment, no
matter where you are from or at what stage in
your life you are.
You’re probably fed up with everyone telling
you that university was the best time of their
lives. Yes, it can be great but the first few days
and weeks can be a rollercoaster of emotions.
You arrive with a suitcase full of stuff and a
head full of expectations. You’re surrounded
by new people who are all trying to make an
impression. It may look as if everybody else
knows what they’re doing, but many don’t.
If you are thriving in this environment then
that’s fantastic. But if you’re not, please don’t
worry; you’re not alone. You don’t have to
make all your new friends in the first few days.
You don’t need to have all your timetable
and classes sorted out straight away, and you
definitely don’t have to know everything by the
end of Freshers’ Week. Transition can take time
and it isn’t a process you can rush.
It’s important to us that you feel settled and
secure throughout your time studying with us.
However, there are some things you must do
as a new student. If you feel overwhelmed in
the first few days, then concentrate on getting
these things done, and the rest can wait:
Visit the Student Information Desk in
Peter Lanyon Building
Meet your supervisor or Personal Tutor
There are plenty of support services to help
you. You can access them via email, web, or
personal appointments. See the list on p18.
IEXETER
If you have a smartphone you can download
our free University of Exeter app, iExeter,
which is available from the App Store and
Google Play. Keep it on your smartphone for
University information throughout the year
about your timetable, library, social activities,
and much more.
5
GETTING INVOLVED
Participating in activities on campus is a great
way of meeting people, making friends,
building networks, and maybe even adding
experiences and responsibility to your CV.
There are a huge amount of events taking
place across the University during Freshers’
Week, organised by the 61 clubs and societies
and the 44 sports clubs. Each society has at
least one activity planned, many of which are
free taster sessions.
All societies charge varying membership fees,
so why not try a free activity before you join?
You can join a student society online at any
point in the year by visiting the societies page
on FXU’s website: www.fxu.org.uk/sport_soc
You can read more about our arts and culture
and sport provision later in this guide.
6
ACADEMIC INDUCTION
Academic Induction is your core timetable
during Freshers’ Week, and your sessions may
run across the whole week. All other activities
must fit around these. Most societies put on
multiple events during Freshers’ Week and early
in your first term, so if there is a clash check the
online events guide to see when you can catch
your favourite society at another time.
You can view your personal Academic
Induction timetable via iExeter and exehub. If there are any issues with your timetable
please contact the Student Information Desk in Peter Lanyon Building.

GRAND CHALLENGES
Grand Challenges is an annual programme,
unique to the University, in which
undergraduate students work together in
interdisciplinary research groups, alongside
some of our top academics, to address some
of the greatest challenges of the 21st century.
From mental health to population pressures,
sustainable tourism to global security – and
many more – which Challenge will you choose?
You don’t need to have knowledge of these
subjects beforehand. Grand Challenges is a
great opportunity to pick a subject outside of
your area of study and add a new dimension
to your learning experience. Your contribution
to the programme will be recognised on your
degree transcript, you’ll receive a certificate of
participation and depending on your course
you may even have the option to take Grand
Challenges as a credit-bearing module.
@uofe_challenges
This is your chance to broaden your intellectual
horizons whilst meeting new people from
across the University, improving your
employability skills, as well as accessing the
vast range of resources available at Exeter.
Each Challenge is led by an academic who
specialises in the Challenge subject, and staff
are committed to sharing their knowledge and
expertise to support your research.
Grand Challenges offers a fun and inspiring
experience. Previously students have created
apps, built robots, performed plays, run social
media campaigns, lobbied politicians and gone
on to work with the Guild and University to
implement real change. Grand Challenges

SPORT
Cornwall offers amazing opportunities for sport
in the community, and especially on the water;
those eager to explore the options can join the
Falmouth and Exeter Sports Initiative – FLEXSI
– which provides access to an extensive range
of non-competitive sports activities from
archery to windsurfing. Prices for FLEXSI
Activities’ members are kept to a minimum and
substantially discounted, often free.
FACILITIES
Our facilities are available for all students to use
on a casual basis via pay as you go, or you can
join as a member. Our spacious and modern
campus Fitness Centre offers the latest sports
equipment, resistance and free weight areas.
Inductions, help and advice are available via
our friendly and fully qualified team of staff. We
also offer table tennis and an exercise studio.
Regular classes include spinning, yoga, pilates,
kettlebells, boxercise and zumba.
Our classes are excellent methods of keeping
fit, healthy and relaxed and are available
throughout the week. You can attend some
high or medium intensity sessions or relax and
completely chill out in the relaxation sessions
such as Yoga or Meditation.
STUDENT SPORT
Away from the gym, the campus has new one
and two-mile running routes, an orienteering
13
route and easy-to-use outdoor gym
equipment. We also have a multi-use games
area, which offers an all-weather, floodlit facility
for five-a-side football, hockey skills, and tennis.
FXU offer a wide range of student run
sports clubs, ranging from the competitive to
recreational and social. No previous sporting
experience is required to join any of our
clubs, which offer a welcoming and friendly
environment, training, and exciting social
events. Many clubs play in local leagues as
well as university-related competitions. FXU,
our Students’ Union, is registered with British
Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS).
Water sports feature strongly in Cornwall;
it’s one of the best places in the country for
surfing and sailing, and the Penryn Campus has
great links with local water sports providers
and clubs, including traditional Cornish gigrowing clubs. The Cornwall-based surf team
has recently enjoyed consistent success in the
BUCS surf competitions, with the women’s
team winning the overall championship.
At the FXU Activities Office there is a range
of equipment available to hire. These include
surf boards, rounders kits, volleyballs, and
badminton and tennis rackets.
Our contact details are listed in the student
services directory on page 20.

ARTS AND CULTURE
ART
Cornwall has attracted artists for generations.
Living in an area with a big art student population
guarantees loads of exciting art events all year
round, with many taking place on campus.
Nearby Falmouth also has many galleries and
studios to inspire you. Further afield, there’s
Tate St Ives as well as many galleries throughout
Cornwall, particularly around Penzance and
Newlyn.
FILMS, PERFORMANCE AND COMEDY
The Performance Centre on campus provides
purpose-built facilities for students and visiting
performers. There’s also a cinema on campus.
Falmouth has the five-screen Phoenix Cinema,
along with The Poly, which offers film, theatre,
comedy and other events. The Minack, a theatre
cut out of the cliffs at Porthcurno, is as striking
as it sounds. The internationally-renowned
Kneehigh Theatre offers ground-breaking work,
and Truro’s Hall for Cornwall hosts national
music, comedy, dance and theatre tours.
MUSIC
In addition to the on-campus venue – The
Stannary – the Eden Project’s annual Eden
Sessions bring high profile artists to Cornwall
every year. Falmouth’s Princess Pavilion hosts
national and local musicians and the town’s many
bars and pubs also feature lots of live music.

ACCELERATE
The Accelerate system is a new, innovative
way for you to engage with your teaching and
learning and provide feedback both during and
after modules.
It not only offers a quick and easy way for you
and your lecturers to engage in dialogue about
your learning but you can also comment and
raise questions about your modules. This may
include problems with teaching or assessment,
or general questions about the material. Both
staff and students are able to respond to
questions and help each other, and you will be
able rate questions and comments to identify
the most useful questions and answers.
Accelerate enables you to:
Use mobile devices to submit feedback
anywhere, anytime
Create a dialogue with your lecturers and
peers through in-module, online discussion
Submit end of module feedback to help
improve teaching
Make a positive impact on your learning
environment
Please note that for 2015-16 you will only
be able to feedback during your module if
your module lead has chosen to activate this
new function. If this function is active your
module lead will inform you of this.
