Web Protocol: HTTP
Hypertext transfer protocol: 4-step process between
client and web server

• GET request from a browser to web server
GET / HTTP / 1.1
Accept: image/gif.
Accept-Language: en

• POST submits a form to web server with
form field names and values

Web Protocol: URL
• Universal resource locator
[protocol]://[web server address]:[port]/[directory]/[file name]
• A typical URL:

Wireless Application Protocol
• Facilitates hand-held devices such as cell
phone users and palm-held devices to
connect to the web
• Information from the web is specially
formatted to remove images and to display
in microbrowsers
• Originated from HDML(handheld markup
language) to wireless markup language

Intranet and Extranet
• These are networks that use Internet
(TCP/IP) and web protocols (HTTP)
• Intranet is a network where the access is
limited to employees of one company
• Extranet is a network that provides
controlled access to company’s
employees, its suppliers and customers

Virtual Private Network
• VPN connects a company’s LAN to those
of its suppliers and to its mobile
employees
• The network runs over the Internet and is
therefore cost-effective
• Encryption is used for security
• VPN software at the server and the client
end provide controlled access to
resources
