POSTGRADUATE STUDY AT
THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER
Professor Sir Steve Smith,
Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive
Postgraduate education matters now
more than ever. The contribution of
postgraduates to the global economy
cannot be overstated; they form the
high-level skills base and knowledge
economy that we need to invest in
if we are to safeguard our financial,
scientific, and intellectual futures.
The contribution to the individual is
even more profound. As well as the
economic benefits – people with a
postgraduate qualification can expect
to earn £5,000 more a year on average
(or £200,000 over a 40-year working
life*) than someone only holding a
Bachelor’s degree – a postgraduate
degree can open a world of other
opportunities.
From specific careers that require
specialist training – be that in
engineering, education, academia, or
healthcare – to highly competitive
industries and businesses where
an extra level of expertise can give
you the edge, and, especially, to the
* According to research undertaken by the Sutton Trust, 2013.
joy of learning, discovering, and
understanding a subject you feel
passionate about to the very deepest
level, you will find that a postgraduate
qualification will be one of the most
rewarding things you ever do.
I come from a working class
background, and was told that ‘people
like you don’t go to university.’ But I
was lucky enough to have a teacher
who gave me the confidence to
succeed, and I was the first person
in my family to go to university.
That experience, for me, has fired a
life-long focus on access to education.
University is about achieving
potential, not simply a reward for
where you were born in life. We
need to invest, both intellectually
and financially, in the people who
are generating new knowledge and
teaching future generations, and
the key way to do that is through
postgraduate education.
3
ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Exeter was given its
charter in 1955, but has educational
roots stretching back more than 150
years. Today, we are a member of the
prestigious Russell Group of research
intensive universities, and combine
academic excellence and world-leading
research with stunning campuses in the
most beautiful part of the UK.
Our six academic colleges cover every
aspect of the sciences, humanities, social
sciences, business, and medicine. We
have campuses at Penryn and Truro
in Cornwall, as well as in Exeter itself.
Our staff and students are from all
over the world and from every kind
of background.
spaces and laboratories to student
accommodation and sports facilities –
making our campuses as cutting-edge
as they are beautiful, and perfectly suited
to postgraduate study.
We believe that higher education has
the power to transform people’s lives,
via the benefits of studying and through
the impact of research. Our students
demand a great deal of us and we of
them – we aim to make our teaching
and research inspirational and your
learning experience exceptional.

WHAT IS
POSTGRADUATE STUDY?
Postgraduate study is a level
above undergraduate study,
and consequently places serious
academic demands on you as
a student.
The majority of taught postgraduate
programmes at Exeter are Masters
degrees. These normally combine
advanced level tuition with the
completion of a dissertation under the
guidance of an individual member of staff.
You will usually have a choice of modules
so that you can tailor your programme to
your own interests. Many of our taught
degrees follow a flexible modular format
whereby you can choose from a range of
specialist pathways or combine modules
from a range of areas.
5
MA, MSc, MRes
PgCert and PgDip
We offer the Master of Arts (MA),
Master of Science (MSc) and the
Master of Research (MRes). The MRes
degree, highly valued by employers,
combines advanced subject-specific
tuition with advanced level training
in the methodological, analytic and
research skills which are vital for the
undertaking of further research. Also
on offer are other specialist taught
postgraduate degrees, such as the Master
of Business Administration (MBA)
and the Master of Laws (LLM).
Some of our Masters degrees can be
taken in a shorter form, by omitting
the dissertation or some of the taught
modules. Whereas a Masters programme
represents 180 credits of which around
60-90 will be for the dissertation
element, Postgraduate Diplomas (120
credits) and Postgraduate Certificates
(60 credits) covering only taught
modules are also available in a number
of subject areas.
Several of our subjects also offer the
opportunity to study a Masters by
Research, giving you the opportunity
to gain a Masters degree by carrying
out an independent research project in
a specific subject under the supervision
of an academic expert, rather than via
scheduled tuition. Masters by Research
programmes are usually approximately
30 per cent cheaper than taught Masters
degrees, but sometimes have more
stringent entry criteria. For full details
see our website: www.exeter.ac.uk/
postgraduate
Part-time study
and distance learning
Most Masters programmes are
11-12 months full-time, with many
programmes also available for parttime study and lasting roughly twice
as long. Please note that international
students are subject to visa regulations
which normally prevent part-time study.
Increasingly we offer distance-learning
programmes which require little or
no attendance at our campuses and
enable you to study for a postgraduate
qualification from Exeter, anywhere
in the world. Some programmes are
delivered via ‘block teaching’; intensive
one to two week bursts of on-campus
lectures, seminars, and activities,
which can fit more easily around your
working life.
Contact hours
Contact hours vary widely between
programmes: science courses can involve
an almost 9-5 schedule of lectures,
talks, meetings, and lab sessions; whilst
humanities degrees may feature only
a few hours of timetabled classes a
week, but will require you to undertake
a substantial amount of reading and
research outside of official teaching
hours. If you are studying full-time,
expect to be working approximately
40 hours per week towards your degree.
Postgraduate study is much more about
collaboration between academics and
students than undergraduate study. It’s
important to take advantage of this
relationship by asking questions and
seeking advice in order to excel at your
chosen programme.
Research degrees/
Doctoral College
This prospectus deals primarily with
postgraduate taught programmes. We
also offer a full range of postgraduate
research degrees supported by the
University of Exeter Doctoral College.
In addition to Masters by Research, you
can also study for Master of Philosophy
(MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD) degrees, as well as a number of
professional doctorates (some of which
are detailed in this prospectus).
To find out more about studying for a
research degree with us, please visit our
website: www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate
The life of an MA
student is busy. When I
applied I was aware there
would be a step up, but
the levels of commitment
demanded from you are
pretty large. Not so large
that they’re unmanageable,
but you do have to
dedicate a lot of your
life to organisation and
reading. That said, this
has undoubtedly been the
best six months of my life.
I can’t wait to begin my
dissertation in April.
Tom Oberst,
MA Classics and Ancient History

Athena SWAN
The University is a member of the Athena SWAN Charter which was established in
2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women
in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in
higher education and research. In May 2015 the Charter was expanded to recognise
work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and
in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The Charter now
recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just
barriers to progression that affect women.
The University is proud to have held a Bronze
institutional award since 2011 and now holds
seven departmental awards; Silver: University
of Exeter Medical School, Sport and Health
Sciences and the combined disciplines of Biology
and Geography at the Penryn Campus; Bronze:
Mathematics and Computer Science, Psychology,
Geography (Exeter) and Biology (Exeter).
All STEMM departments at Exeter are
committed to the Athena SWAN Charter and
the departments of Engineering and Physics
also made Bronze applications in April 2015.
Further information on the University’s
commitment to gender equality can be found

INSPIRING RESEARCH
The University of Exeter is a
vibrant centre for new ideas
and our research makes a
difference across the world.
Our research income doubled
in the five years prior to
2013 and we have a growing
reputation for the impact and
importance of our research, as
evidenced by our very strong
performance in the Research
Excellence Framework 2014.
Nobody has said ‘no’
to me when I’ve come up
with an idea for research.
The capacity to say ‘yes’ to
new ideas requires vision
and confidence, and there’s
a progressive culture of
support and expectation.
Professor Mark Jackson,
Research Theme Leader for Medical Humanities
9
We are constantly seeking new ways
to engage with government, industry,
and the community in order to build
productive, sustainable partnerships and
tackle some of the fundamental issues
facing humankind. Our research income
has more than doubled in the five years
to 2013.
 F
ollowing the REF HEFCE has
awarded us an additional £3.8
million for research, the third highest
gain amongst English universities.
 We are ranked 16th nationally
taking account of the proportion
of staff submitted.*
 9 8 per cent of the University of
Exeter’s research is of international
quality.
 This is a significant increase since
RAE 2008 when 82 per cent of our
research was rated as world-leading
or internationally excellent.
 O
ur world-leading (4*) research has
increased from 17 per cent to 29 per
cent compared to the RAE in 2008.
 O
ur market share of world-leading
or internationally excellent research
has increased by 22 per cent.
 We have nine Units of Assessment
in the top 10 nationally for worldleading or internationally excellent
research with three in the top five:
Theology (2nd), Area Studies,
Archaeology (3rd), Politics (5th),
Sociology, Education, Sport and
Exercise Sciences, Public Health,
Biological Sciences.
 We rank 16th nationally for worldleading (4*) publications and 11th
in the Russell Group.
*Not including specialist institutions, or those with anomalous data.
We are particularly committed to
encouraging new ideas and nurturing
talent, and as such we boast an extremely
high number of early career researchers
at Exeter. 30 per cent of our academic
staff are early career researchers, a much
greater proportion than most other
universities. This makes the University
of Exeter one of the very best places to
pursue postgraduate study and research.
We believe the future of research lies
in breaking down traditional barriers
between academic disciplines so the
bigger problems of the 21st century can
be considered from human as well as
physical perspectives. We have a number
of interdisciplinary research themes,
which fit closely with international
research priorities, from climate change
to conflicts in the Middle East.
We provide a world-class research
environment, which we have enriched
with more than £280 million investment
into infrastructure and staff. This
includes the new Environment and
Sustainability Institute at our Penryn
Campus in Cornwall, the Living
Systems Institute currently under
development at our Streatham Campus,
and radically expanded laboratories,
library facilities, and research spaces.
This has revolutionised our campuses
and made the University of Exeter a
genuine destination university for the
21st century.
Doctoral College
The University of Exeter Doctoral
College stimulates, supports and sustains
a vibrant research and intellectual
environment across and between
disciplines for postgraduate and
early career researchers. Focusing on
investment and development in training,
resources and facilities, the Doctoral
College provides an outstanding
experience for those in the early
stages of their research careers.
Doctoral Training
Partnerships
We are one of only a handful of
universities to have successfully secured
Doctoral Training Partnerships with
each of the UK Research Councils.
These partnerships offer outstanding
benefits to postgraduate researchers,
from increased access to funding, multiinstitution research supervision and
collaboration, and integral doctoral
skills training.
We offer a broad portfolio of research
opportunities, from Masters by Research
degrees to MPhil programmes and
PhD studentships via our fully-funded
Doctoral Training Partnerships. To find

FINANCE AND FUNDING
Money is the single biggest barrier preventing people studying for a postgraduate degree. Securing
funding for your Masters is vital to realising your ambitions. The funding landscape for postgraduate
education is changing rapidly, and navigating through it can be difficult.
When planning how to fund your
postgraduate degree, make sure you start
early and think outside of the box; the
earlier you start planning the longer you
have to research opportunities, or just
accumulate savings. Remember to sell
yourself in applications for funding too;
other people will likely be applying for
the same money.
We frequently update our website
as policies change and new funding
opportunities become available, so
please check it regularly.
www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate/funding
How much will it cost?
Your tuition fee is only one part of the
cost of doing a postgraduate degree: you
will also need to account for living costs
and accommodation.
Tuition fees
Tuition fees vary from programme to
programme, and are detailed in each of
the subject entries at the back of this
prospectus (see the inside back cover for
the programme index). For Home/EU
students, most fall between £7,000
and £12,000.
Accommodation and living costs
The National Union of Students
estimates living costs outside of London
to be approximately £12,000 per year,
including accommodation. This figure is
given as a guide only; depending on your
priorities and how you budget it could
vary significantly in either direction.
Outline accommodation costs are
detailed on p26.
Scholarships
Scholarships are one of the best ways to help pay for your postgraduate degree.
We offer numerous scholarships to
encourage exceptional students to apply
for Masters programmes. They are often specific to individual programmes
and/or students from individual
countries or regions.
Scholarships tend to be highly
competitive and merit-based, so we
recommend investigating options early
as deadlines and eligibility vary. Many
schemes will not cover full costs, but
may go some way to reducing the costs.
You cannot normally hold more
than one scholarship awarded by the
University, but you can usually apply for
as many external schemes as you like.
Alternative funding
Beyond scholarships there are as
many ways to pay for your postgraduate
studies as there are people undertaking
postgraduate study; wages, bursaries,
savings, inheritance, and, increasingly,
alternative methods such as
crowdfunding and philanthropy, are
all valid and useful alternative ways
of funding your degree.
You can find out more about
alternative funding on our website:
www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate/

In my city centre
library I looked at the
Grants Register, which lists
various grants available
to local students studying
at postgraduate level. My
scholarship in particular was
aimed at those who had lived
in the area where I grew up
and had attended college or
sixth form within the borough.
The application form asked
what course I was hoping
to study and why I thought
it would be beneficial to me
and the wider society in the
future. I was awarded the
full cost of my tuition fees
which took a huge weight
off my mind!

Postgraduate loan scheme
A new system of postgraduate loans for
Masters programmes is being developed
for students at English universities. Initially
announced as part of the Chancellor’s 2014
Autumn Statement, these governmentbacked student loans could revolutionise
postgraduate funding in the UK.
At the time this prospectus went to print the
proposal was still under consultation, so no
details were finalised. Loans are proposed to
be introduced from 2016 and provide up to
£10,000 a year for taught Masters courses in
all subject areas.

INVESTING IN
WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES
In recent years we have invested more than £500 million in the facilities across our
campuses. This has included new and redeveloped spaces for teaching, learning,
research and studying, as well as sport, accommodation and social spaces.
Science
We boast state-of-the-art laboratories for
science, technology, engineering, mathematics
and medicine across all our campuses, including
the Environment and Sustainability Institute at
our Penryn Campus.
At our Streatham Campus we are currently
developing the Living Systems Institute (LSI);
a £52.5 million interdisciplinary research
centre bringing together leading mathematicians,
physicists, cell and molecular biologists, biomedical
scientists and engineers. Together they will apply
investigative techniques from engineering and
physics to make biology a predictive as well as an
observational science, pioneering an exciting new
approach to understanding how diseases evolve
and how they can be diagnosed and cured more
effectively. This is our largest single investment
in science, and part of an overall investment of
£340 million since 2008.
www.exeter.ac.uk/livingsystems
Libraries
Our main library facilities at Streatham and
Penryn are open 24/7, and we also have specialist
library space for postgraduate students; Research
Commons, which houses our Special Collections
and Bill Douglas Cinema Museum.
We have been investing heavily in digital library
resources which can be used wherever and
whenever they are needed; what you see on the
physical shelves of our libraries now makes up
less than half of what is actually available to you.

THE SOUTH WEST
Students at the University of Exeter, whether based
in the city itself or at our campuses in Cornwall,
benefit from living in one of the most beautiful parts
of the country. It’s no wonder our students are
consistently amongst the most satisfied in the UK.
All campuses are easily accessible from London by train and
European flights are available from Exeter, Newquay and
Bristol airports.
LIVING IN EXETER
Set in the heart of the beautiful Devon
countryside, Exeter is consistently rated
as one of the best places to live, work,
and study in the UK.
Boasting a high quality of life and
low crime rate, a quarter of Exeter’s
population study or work at the
University, making the city a welcoming
environment for students and academics
alike, with a vibrant and fun culture
and relaxed atmosphere.
With a population of 120,000, there
are plenty of cafés, restaurants, pubs
and modern shops which sit alongside
Exeter’s historic buildings such as the
14th century cathedral. Most new
students find that Exeter is not
a particularly expensive city in which
to live.
Exeter is the administrative and
commercial centre of Devon, and
the region’s exquisite coastline and
impressive national parks are only a short
drive, cycle, bus or train journey away.
Streatham Campus
The Streatham Campus, the University’s
largest site, is built around a country
estate overlooking the city and is readily
acknowledged as one of the most
beautiful in the country.
A Registered Botanic Garden,
Streatham Campus is described by
The Times as the “best-gardened campus
in Britain”. The grounds feature many
exotic trees and shrubs and stunning
views across the city to the sea at
Exmouth. Many students say they
simply fell in love with the campus
when they came to visit – its lakes,
parkland, woodland and gardens make
it a very special place that offers a safe
and enjoyable environment for study.

St Luke’s Campus
The St Luke’s Campus is 15 minutes’
walk from the city centre and just
over a mile away from the Streatham
Campus across the city. It is home to
students in the Graduate School of
Education, the department of Sport and
Health Sciences, and the University
of Exeter Medical School.
Students have studied at St Luke’s for
over 150 years and although much has
changed over the years, the campus has
retained a vibrant, collegiate atmosphere
in which everyone soon gets to know
each other. The campus benefits from
its own library and sports facilities,
including an indoor heated swimming
pool. Students at St Luke’s also take
full advantage of all the academic, social
and sporting facilities at the Streatham
Campus which is a 25-minute walk or
short bus ride away.

The Students’ Guild
The Students’ Guild, our award
winning students’ union, is central to
student life. The Guild is a dynamic,
innovative organisation, existing to
represent all students. Through Guild
representation, the broad range of
services, and exceptional activities,
we are confident that you’ll have the
best possible university experience at

LIVING IN CORNWALL
Living in Cornwall
Our Penryn and Truro campuses are in
what many consider to be the UK’s most
beautiful county. The Penryn Campus is
just a few minutes’ walk from Penryn,
home to a rapidly expanding collection
of independent cafés, shops, galleries
and restaurants, and a railway station
with services to Falmouth and the city of
Truro (10 and 20 minutes, respectively).
Falmouth is a vibrant student town with a
wealth of bars, pubs and restaurants and
a lively café culture; its seven beaches,
beautiful rivers and world-famous marina
attract national and international visitors.
Truro is the most southerly city in
England and close to some of the best
beaches in the country. The Cathedral’s
impressive gothic towers dominate the
city skyline, with an exciting array of
shops, restaurants and leisure facilities
in the surrounding streets.
Penryn Campus
The Penryn Campus is set in 100 acres
of countryside, close to the waterside
town of Falmouth, and boasts beautiful
views over the Fal estuary. It offers
peace and tranquillity as well as a lively
student community. The campus rates
exceptionally well for student satisfaction:
students say it’s a highly personal
experience, intellectually stretching but
great fun, where everyone quickly gets
to know their peers.
The campus is shared with Falmouth
University. The two institutions have
separate teaching and research facilities,
but students share accommodation and
social spaces, including The Exchange,
the Students’ Union www.fxu.org.uk,
and campus sports facilities. This creates
a vibrant mixture of students from
science, engineering, humanities and
arts backgrounds, both on campus and
in the local area.

FXU (Students’ Union)
The University of Exeter has the highest
level of student engagement in the UK,
through clubs and societies, volunteering
and representation. In Cornwall these
activities are supported by Falmouth
and Exeter Students’ Union (FXU,
which supports students from both
universities). At the last count there
were 98 sports clubs and societies which
Cornwall Campuses students could join.

centre for practice, research and teaching.
We have three Research Centres in the

interdisciplinary research interests. We believe
in providing a highly supportive learning
environment where you will become an
active part of our postgraduate community.
As one of the largest and best equipped

excellent teaching and performance spaces.
Our connections span the world and include
European, American, Australian, Indian and
Indonesian universities and practice-based
institutions. Our students have benefited from
collaborations with organisations like the Globe
Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company,
as well as local and national theatre companies,
hospitals, prisons, and schools. Our industry
links are strong and our graduates have gone
on to form such critically acclaimed companies
as Theatre Alibi, Forced Entertainment and
Punchdrunk.
At Exeter we offer three distinct pathways
for you to choose from depending on your
interests. The Staging Shakespeare pathway
offers the opportunity to explore the practical
side of Shakespeare with both traditional
and contemporary interpretations. The
Applied, Community and Socially-Engaged
Performance pathway looks at how drama can
have a positive impact on society as a tool for
education, political engagement and healing.
The open Theatre Practice pathway covers a
broad range of subject areas including directing,
writing and psychophysical actor training. This
pathway offers an excellent mix of practical,
theoretical and research methods that will help

I initially chose to
study in Britain based on my
knowledge of how taught
Masters programmes work
here. I wanted a fast-paced,
independent, learner-directed
style of learning, along with
seminar and tutorial-based
instruction, and that is what I
have received. I also realised
that studying in the UK was
actually cheaper than studying
in the USA.
I chose Exeter based on its
reputation in the field among
my colleagues in Japan, and
because it is located in a less
expensive part of Britain with
relatively warm weather. This
has paid off because the winter
has been very snowy in most
of the country, but not here!

I’ve really enjoyed
the seminars – having the

Exeter has a number of leading researchers in my field,
as well as an exceptional English department. Having studied
as an undergraduate here I was accustomed to Exeter’s
teaching and already loved the department, the University,
and the campus. I also enjoyed the wide variety of other
activities on offer at Exeter which are important to connect
with while doing a Masters, I feel, as it can be quite an isolating
experience otherwise.
I enjoy the contemporary relevance and creativity of my
area of study and the insight it allows me into recent history.
Furthermore, I like the focus on popular culture in more recent
literary work.

Masters by Research in Geography
Our MSc by Research in Geography has been
developed to allow you to undertake a research
project in an area that interests you, within a
shorter timeframe than the two year MPhil
or three year PhD. If you are interested in
converting to an MPhil or PhD at a later stage,
the MSc by Research is sufficiently flexible to
allow you to do so. We welcome applications
for study in human and physical geographies,
and are particularly interested in projects that
complement and extend existing strengths
within and across our research groups.
The diverse natural environment
of the campus location attracted me a
lot. To me, this location is like a ‘natural
laboratory’ for the students of the
University. Forests, hills, coast, mines
and different weather patterns will make
anyone think about climate change
and sustainability. If anyone wants to learn geography and
environmental issues and prefers learning by doing, I think the
University of Exeter should be their first choice.

I love the diversity of
Classics. In one day you can
go from reading a dry historical
account to the frothing rage
of an ancient satirist, and then
back to ancient philosophy or
love poetry. With Classics and
Ancient History you don’t just
study a culture; you study a
vibrant world that is familiar
and yet delightfully alien.

Studying my MA at Exeter was a
brilliant experience. In particular, the
Global Security module allowed me to
fully explore concepts I had encountered
at undergraduate level but with a much
deeper focus.
During this module we were visited by
interesting guests including an international development
worker, a foreign office civil servant and a former general.
These real-world insights were exceptionally helpful in
connecting theory to practice, and served to provide
exceptional depth to the Global Security module.

Research is at the heart of the department of
Theology and Religion, which boasts a diverse
and vibrant group of students from many parts
of the world. Our current research interests
and expertise encompass biblical studies,
Jewish studies – from early rabbinic literature
to the Holocaust and the State of Israel –
early Christian history, modern theology,
practical and ecumenical theology, ethics,
philosophy of religion, and the interface
between science and religion; and much
more. Graduate students in all of these fields
are invited to become part of our academic
community – in which both discipline-specific
and multi-disciplinary skills are nurtured and
tested, and in which faculty work closely with
students to encourage creativity and enable
critical thought.
The department places strong emphasis
on research-inspired teaching, and enjoys
an excellent reputation for teaching of the
highest quality. Unparalleled league table
rankings (including a satisfaction rate of
100 per cent in the National Student Survey
for three consecutive years) are evidence
of excellent undergraduate and MA-level
teaching across a broad curriculum, as well as
high-quality research student supervision. The
department’s academic and administrativesupport staff are committed to helping you
make the most of all that the University offers.

supportive group of staff and
an exciting range of research

also postgraduate research

great mix of faith backgrounds
