Rating: 1 E
Other Names: M92
Astronomical Leage Program: Messier Club; Urban Deep Sky Club
Position: 1717+4308
Type : Gc
Dimensions: 18'
Class: 4
Magnitude : 6.5
Cluster population: 250,000
Notes:
It was discovered by J. Bode in 1777; Messier added it to his list on March 18, 1781.
Lord Rosse reported spiral structure.
The brightest stars are 12.1m and the horizontal branch is 15.1m.
Its diameter is about 80 light years. It has the mass of 330,000 Suns.
Observations:
C8 at 206x. Semi-resolved at all powers, it is a superb globular in its own right, and
suffers from being too close to NGC 6205 (M13).
C11 at 115x. The "other" Hercules globular. Semi-resolved under a 10-day old
moon. At 193x, more stars were resolved.
At the 2001 Texas Star Party, I got the chance to view this cluster through the 36-inch
f9 Cassegrain at McDonald Observatory with the Chief Astronomer of the Hobby-Eberle
Telescope, Matthew Shertone. He pointed out that this globular has undergone core
collapse, and in the giant 36-incher, there is a definite gap or thinning out of stars
between the core and the outer periphery, a feature that my 8-inch SCT misses.

Observations:

Some amateur reports include W and pB, W and W, D! and B, O and bW. Olcott
describes them: "both fine green coloring." Others note "This star reminds me of Acrux,
