NGC 2419

Other Names: The Intergalactic Tramp, H I 218
Astronomical League Program: Caldwell Club; Herschel 400 Club
Position: 0738+3853
Type: Gc
Dimensions: 2'
Class: 2
Magnitude: 11.5
Notes:
It was discovered by William Herschel on December 31, 1788. John Herschel also
noted it in 1833.
It is 380 light years in diameter. The horizontal branch is 20.2m.
There is no other globular cluster within 60o of NGC 2419. It lies 210,000 light years
from the Galaxy's center, about as far away as the Magellanic Clouds! It was once
thought to be intergalactic, but recent measurements show that it is still a captive of the
Milky Way's gravity, albeit on a highly elliptical orbit.
Observations:
C8 at 83x. The cluster magnifies well, but shows no resolution or even mottling. The
7m star to the E (SAO 60229) is very bad on the view!
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
Its diameter would be 55,000 miles.
Distance (LY): 293,000
Radial velocity (km/sec): +20
Luminosity (suns): 171,000
