Observations:
30-inch + 40mm (94x) It shows up as a faint streak in a very rich field. The much
larger and brighter NGC 4080 is just 20 min N. The galaxy seems to sit in a shallow
"bowl" of stars.
Distance: 35,000,000 light years
Luminosity: 1,100,000,000 Suns
NGC 4088
Other Names: UGC 7081, H I 206

Class: Sc
Dimensions: 5' x 2'
Magnitude : 11.1
PA: 43
Notes:
Member of the Canes Venatici II Cloud.
Observations:
C8 at 65x. It is a uniform haze with a NE-SW axis. The center is noticeably brighter.
Two bright stars lie to the S.

Astronomical Leage Program: Messier Club, Herschel 400 Club
Rating: 2 E
Position: 1219+4718
Type : Gal
Surface brightness: 13.8
Class: SAB(s)bc II-III
Dimensions: 20' x 6'
Magnitude : 9.0

Notes:
It is a radio source and Seyfert galaxy and is a member of the Canes Ventatici I
Cloud.
The VLBA has detected a warped disk of matter within 1 light-year of its center.
Doppler shifts suggest a black hole with a mass of 39 million suns.

Y CVn (La Superba; HD 110914; SAO 44317)
Position: 1245+4527
Mag : 5.4
Spectrum : C7 Ia
Color : rO!!
Assumed distance: 710 light years
Assumed luminosity (suns): 280
Notes:
The name La Superba! was assigned to this star by Father Secchi due to its spectrum.
It is similar to the red giant R Leporus (Hind's Crimson Star), both being fine examples of
"carbon stars".
Y CVn is probably as large as Mira, and is one of the coolest stars known (only
2,600o K at the surface). It is also an infra-red source.
