Position: 0415+5114
Type : Oc
Dimensions: 23'
Class: II 2m
Cluster population: 80
Magnitude : 6.4
Notes:
It is 270 million years old. Its earliest stars are B8 and A0 types, and 165 members
have been counted. The brightest star is 8.8m.
It lies 30,000 light years from the galactic center and right in its plane.
Observations:
C8 at 83x. Twin arcs of stars. Rather faint and spread out E to W. Note the tiny
clump of stars on the NE edge— run the magnification up on this splotch and see if you
can resolve it.
C11 at 115x. In my field orientation, it had a "epsilon" shape with the bottom half of
the epsilon most prevalent. About 60 stars counted.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
Its diameter would be 5,600 miles, and the stars would be 635 miles apart.

Notes:
This particular nebula has an 11th magnitude star in its center. The "reddish" color of
this object indicates that it is heavily composed of HII. Note how the central star is
"blowing" a bubble in the gas that immediately surrounds it. The winds from this star are
so energetic that they are breaking up the nebula.
[Source: http://www.noao.edu/outreach/aop/observers/n1491.html]
Observations:
C8 at 65x. Use a nebular filter, if you have one. Large and faint, you probably won't
be able to see it without a filter. It shows a knotty structure, and has an 11m star on the

AB-C 1828: 1.5 @ 312. Over 100 measurements. No quadrant reversal-- it is
moving that fast. Orbit calculated; period is 425 years, semi-major axis of 1.38",
retrograde motion.
AC 1888: 23.7 @ 210. 3 measurements. 3 measurements.
Burnham found a 7.6m companion to A in 1901, at 0.2 @ 140. It was last measured
at 0.3 @ 166 (1997). Orbit calculated. Period is 26.89 years, semi-major axis of 0.177",
retrograde motion.
Observations:
C11 at 634x.
I got a figure "8" on AC on a night of 7/10 seeing.
Scale model (in which the Sun is the size of a baseball):
Diameter: A = 6.00 inches.
Separation: AB = 1,826 feet; AC = 9.77 miles.
